On December 4, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater kicked off its highly anticipated 2024-25 season with a dazzling Opening Night Gala at New York City Center. The evening was a tribute to the life and legacy of Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, celebrating her profound contributions to the arts and education. The gala blended artistry, community, and celebration, marking the start of a five-week holiday engagement that promises to captivate audiences.

The program began with a poignant performance of an excerpt from Alvin Ailey’s Cry, the iconic solo originally danced by Judith Jamison. Her unparalleled grace and power in the role set the standard for generations of Ailey dancers. The evening also featured a 25th-anniversary staging of Ronald K. Brown’s Grace, which Jamison herself commissioned. This vibrant and soulful work was enhanced by live vocals from Tony® and GRAMMY® Award-winning artists Leslie Odom, Jr. and Cécile McLorin Salvant, who powerfully brought an electric energy to the stage.

The performance culminated in the stirring finale of Ailey’s signature masterpiece, Revelations. A live choir filled the theater with the stirring sounds of traditional spirituals, lifting the audience to their feet in celebration. The program honored not only Jamison’s legacy but also the enduring mission of Alvin Ailey to uplift and inspire through the transformative power of dance.

The gala wasn’t just a celebration on stage—it extended into the glamorous post-show festivities at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. Over 600 attendees, including luminaries from the worlds of entertainment, business, and philanthropy, gathered for an evening of fine dining, live music, and dancing. Notable guests included Misty Copeland, Bianca Lawson, Michelle Miller, Ty Hunter, Marcus Samuelsson, Legendary Damon, and Honey Balenciaga. Each brought their unique energy to the event, underscoring the company’s cultural significance and far-reaching impact.

The evening was also an opportunity to honor Jody Gottfried Arnhold for her steadfast commitment to accessible dance education and her invaluable support of the Alvin Ailey mission. During opening remarks, Board Chair Daria Wallach announced the creation of an endowment fund in Judith Jamison’s name. This initiative will provide scholarships to The Ailey School in perpetuity, ensuring that Jamison’s vision for fostering the next generation of artists continues to thrive.

The 2024-25 season promises to be an extraordinary one, with world premieres by Jamar Roberts, Hope Boykin, Lar Lubovitch, and Matthew Rushing. Returning favorites, including Revelations, will also take the stage, ensuring a dynamic mix of innovation and tradition. For those unable to attend the New York performances, the company’s national tour, beginning in January, offers additional opportunities to experience the magic.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s opening night was more than a performance—it was a celebration of legacy, community, and artistic excellence. With the holiday engagement running through January 5 and a tour to follow, the season is a testament to the company’s enduring ability to inspire audiences across the globe.
