Why Karamo Brown is sitting out ‘Queer Eye’ press events

The cast of Netflix’s long-running makeover series Queer Eye entered its final promotional stretch with a noticeable absence. Karamo Brown, one of the show’s original stars, stepped away from several high-profile press appearances ahead of the release of the show’s 10th and final season, prompting questions about his sudden decision.

Brown, who has served as the culture and lifestyle expert on the series since its 2018 debut, did not join his castmates for appearances on CBS Mornings or the Today show on Jan. 20. The rest of the group, including Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness and Jeremiah Brent, continued the press tour without him as the season’s premiere approached.

Brown cites mental health concerns

Shortly before the CBS Mornings interview aired, Brown withdrew from the scheduled appearance. A statement from the television personality was shared on air, explaining that he was prioritizing his mental health and stepping back to protect his peace. No specific incident was detailed, but the message emphasized the importance of self-care amid external pressures.

Brown later shared a separate statement connected to the Today show appearance, stating that he had been advised by a therapist to avoid attending and focus on his well-being. He described feeling mentally and emotionally strained over an extended period and said staying home was necessary for his personal health.

The cast responds to his absence

Brown’s decision came as a surprise to his fellow cast members, who acknowledged his absence while continuing to promote the show’s final chapter. Porowski noted that the group functions much like a family and suggested that complicated dynamics can exist alongside mutual respect and shared goals.

Despite the unexpected change, Porowski emphasized the importance of honoring the people featured on the show and the legacy built over the past decade. He framed the press appearances as a chance to celebrate the impact of the series rather than focus on internal challenges.

Support from fellow cast members

Van Ness publicly expressed support for Brown’s choice, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining personal balance while working continuously in the public eye. He praised Brown for modeling the same self-care principles that Queer Eye has promoted throughout its run.

Brent, who joined the show in Season 9 after replacing Bobby Berk, also spoke about the supportive environment he has experienced on the series. He described the experience as transformative and emphasized the sense of safety and growth he felt working alongside the group.

 Context within the show’s history

Queer Eye is a reboot of the early-2000s series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and has become one of Netflix’s most recognizable unscripted franchises. The show centers on personal transformation, emotional growth and acceptance, themes that Brown has often championed both on and off screen.

This is not the first time Brown has spoken candidly about behind-the-scenes challenges. In past interviews, he has acknowledged tensions during the show’s early seasons, including conflicts with Porowski that were later resolved. Those disclosures have contributed to a broader understanding that the series, while uplifting on screen, has not been without its internal struggles.

 The final season moves forward

Netflix is set to release the 10th and final season of Queer Eye on Jan. 21, marking the end of an era for the Fab Five. Promotional efforts continue as the remaining cast members reflect on the show’s cultural impact and the lives it has touched over the years.

As of publication, representatives for Brown and Netflix had been contacted for comment regarding his absence from the press tour. While viewers await the final episodes, Brown’s decision has added a more serious note to the show’s farewell, underscoring the real-life importance of mental health beyond the screen.
