This spring, three historically Black colleges and universities are taking center stage to honor the life, music, and cultural impact of Michael Jackson. Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, and Southern University are celebrating his artistry in a dynamic showcase leading up to the release of Michael, the highly anticipated cinematic portrayal of the King of Pop. The film, distributed by Lionsgate and Universal Pictures, hits theaters April 24, 2026.

The event, titled MICHAEL CELEBRATES: Legacy, Artistry, Culture, brings together the HBCU marching band tradition with Jackson’s enduring influence, highlighting the powerful connection between Black excellence in music and Jackson’s global legacy. Each band offers its own interpretation of the iconic hit “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” blending technical mastery, showmanship, and cultural pride.

Florida A&M’s The Marching 100, Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South, and Southern University’s Human Jukebox each contributed performances over a three-day online event. Fans can view the bands’ distinct takes on Jackson’s classic through the film’s official social media accounts, including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook.

The performances not only highlight musical talent but also showcase the precision, choreography, and pageantry that define HBCU bands. These programs have long been central to campus life and community pride, and this celebration ties that tradition directly to one of music history’s most iconic figures.

Audiences worldwide are invited to join the celebration by posting their own renditions of “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” on social media using the hashtags #MichaelLegacy and #MichaelMovie. This initiative encourages creativity, community involvement, and the continuation of Jackson’s artistic influence across generations.

The campaign is designed to honor the connection between HBCU culture and Michael Jackson’s artistry while giving students, alumni, and fans the opportunity to engage actively in the legacy of one of the world’s most influential performers.

Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, traces Jackson’s evolution from his early days as the lead singer of the Jackson Five to his rise as a global superstar. The film highlights his creative vision, groundbreaking performances, and the cultural moments that made him an icon. The PG-13-rated drama also explores the human side of Jackson, offering audiences a glimpse into his life off-stage.

The cast includes Jaafar Jackson, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo, bringing Jackson’s story to life for fans old and new. Lionsgate and Universal aim to celebrate his enduring influence while inspiring a new generation to embrace music, performance, and cultural pride.

By partnering with these three HBCU bands, the campaign shines a light on the schools’ rich histories, musical innovation, and dedication to Black excellence. The initiative underscores how communities rooted in culture, tradition, and education continue to keep Jackson’s legacy alive.

As Michael approaches its April release, audiences are encouraged to experience the performances and share their own, ensuring the celebration extends far beyond the theater and into the global community of fans, musicians, and students.
