A tragic accident occurred in Queens on Tuesday when a 31-year-old woman was struck and killed by a city Department of Transportation dump truck. The incident took place at the intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard in the Kew Gardens area, according to police reports.

The victim, identified as Nilufar Komilova, was crossing the street when the 48-year-old truck driver, operating a 2017 Mack dump truck, made a right turn onto southbound Lefferts Boulevard. She suffered severe head and torso injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that the driver remained at the location following the collision. No arrests were made, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

City response and safety measures

The New York City Department of Transportation expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the ongoing commitment to improving safety across the city’s fleet. A spokesperson confirmed that the department is reviewing the incident to determine whether additional safety measures can prevent similar accidents in the future.

Officials noted that crashes involving city vehicles have declined by roughly 20% since the launch of the Vision Zero initiative in 2017. The program has focused on reducing traffic deaths and injuries through fleet improvements, including the installation of speed-limiting devices and surround-view camera systems on city vehicles.

Despite these measures, intersections such as Metropolitan Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard continue to present risks. Data compiled over the past year shows one other crash at the same corner that resulted in injury, highlighting persistent safety challenges in the area.

Community impact

The collision has prompted renewed attention to pedestrian safety in Queens and across New York City. Residents and local authorities are calling for continued efforts to make city streets safer for all users, especially in areas with heavy traffic and complex intersections.

Transportation officials reiterated their commitment to evaluating vehicle operations, driver training, and technology upgrades to further reduce the risk of serious accidents. The department stressed that understanding the full circumstances of each incident is key to preventing future tragedies.

The accident serves as a reminder of the risks pedestrians face in busy urban areas and underscores the importance of comprehensive traffic safety initiatives. City leaders and residents alike are examining how safety protocols can continue to evolve to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

The investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing as officials work to determine how it occurred and what further steps can be taken to prevent similar incidents on Queens streets and throughout New York City.
