The second round of the 2026 NCAA women’s basketball tournament delivered a tightly contested matchup as No. 2 Iowa faced No. 10 Virginia in Iowa City. With both teams pushing through four quarters of intense play, the game reached a gripping moment late in the fourth quarter, with the score locked at 57-57 and less than a minute remaining.

The matchup was part of a packed slate of tournament games and brought together two teams with different paths leading into the contest. Iowa entered the game with momentum after securing a first-round win, while Virginia returned to action following a break after its conference tournament exit.

From the opening tip, the game reflected the urgency of March Madness, with each possession carrying added weight. Both teams displayed defensive discipline and offensive determination, keeping the score close throughout.

Standout scorers lead virginia’s effort

Virginia relied on a balanced scoring approach, with multiple players stepping up to keep the team competitive. Kymora Johnson led the scoring effort with 14 points, showing confidence from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. Paris Clark followed closely with 13 points, adding efficiency and control in the backcourt.

Romi Levy contributed 11 points, while Caitlin Weimar added 10, helping to anchor the team’s interior presence. Virginia’s ability to spread scoring across several players allowed the team to maintain pressure on Iowa throughout the game.

The Cavaliers also showed resilience on the boards, collecting 30 rebounds and staying active on defense with steals and shot contests that disrupted Iowa’s rhythm.

Iowa’s inside strength keeps game close

Iowa answered with its own strong performances, led by Ava Heiden, who finished with 22 points. Her efficiency in the paint gave the Hawkeyes a reliable scoring option and helped them stay within reach during critical moments.

Chazadi Wright added 14 points, contributing from both inside and outside, while Hannah Stuelke recorded a double-digit performance with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Her presence on the glass played a key role in Iowa’s ability to control second-chance opportunities.

The Hawkeyes held a rebounding advantage with 36 total boards, creating extra possessions that proved crucial in such a closely contested game. Their defensive effort also stood out, with multiple steals and blocks helping to slow Virginia’s offensive flow.

A tense finish defines the matchup

As the fourth quarter unfolded, the intensity reached its peak. Both teams traded baskets and defensive stops, refusing to give ground. With the clock winding down, every possession became critical, and neither side was able to create a decisive gap.

Turnovers and missed opportunities added to the tension, as both teams fought to maintain control under pressure. Despite strong individual performances and strategic adjustments, the game remained deadlocked at 57-57 in the closing seconds.

The matchup highlighted the competitive nature of the tournament, where even small moments can shape the outcome. It also underscored the importance of depth, execution, and composure in high-stakes games.

A game that reflects march madness intensity

This second-round clash between Iowa and Virginia captured the unpredictability and excitement that define March Madness. With balanced scoring, strong defensive efforts, and a dramatic finish, the game showcased the level of competition present in the women’s tournament.

Both teams demonstrated resilience and determination, leaving a lasting impression through their performance. The contest served as a reminder of how closely matched teams can create compelling moments that resonate beyond the final scoreline.
