Spaceballs 2 trailer drops and nothing is off limits

Apr. 16, 2026 / Film / Author: Praise Swint

The long-anticipated sequel to the 1987 sci-fi parody is officially on the way, as Spaceballs: The New One made its debut at CinemaCon with a teaser that leaned fully into its signature comedic style. More than three decades after the original film became a cult favorite, the follow-up brings back key cast members while introducing a new generation of characters.

The project is led once again by Mel Brooks, who helped shape the original into one of the most recognizable comedy spoofs of its time. Although the filmmaker did not attend the Las Vegas convention in person, he appeared in a pre-recorded segment that confirmed both the sequel and its official title.

The trailer leans into sci-fi parody again

The newly released footage revisits the franchise’s core identity by taking aim at major sci-fi staples. Familiar visual cues include desert landscapes, futuristic explorers and nods to space operas that have dominated pop culture for decades.

The sequence moves quickly, packing in references that reflect how the genre has evolved since the original film debuted.

Original cast members return

Several stars from the original film are back, helping bridge the gap between past and present. Rick Moranis reprises his role as Dark Helmet, alongside George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga and Bill Pullman.

Mel Brooks also returns in his comedic role, maintaining continuity with the original story while embracing the updated tone of the sequel.

New faces join the galaxy

The sequel introduces additional cast members who will expand the story’s universe. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan are among the new additions, though specific character details remain under wraps.

Their inclusion signals a shift toward blending legacy humor with contemporary comedic voices.

The jokes target modern franchises

The trailer highlights a broader range of parody targets compared to the original film. In addition to references inspired by Star Wars, the sequel incorporates elements that reflect more recent blockbuster franchises, including visual nods reminiscent of Avatar and other major cinematic worlds.

The humor appears to draw from both classic and modern influences, positioning the film to appeal to longtime fans as well as newer audiences.

A theatrical release is already set

The sequel is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theaters on April 23, 2027. The extended timeline gives the production room to build anticipation, especially given the long gap since the original film’s release.

Behind the scenes, the project is directed by Josh Greenbaum, with a script developed by a team that includes Josh Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.

A sequel shaped by legacy and modern comedy

The return of Spaceballs marks a rare revival of a comedy franchise that has remained dormant for decades. By combining returning cast members with newer talent, the film appears to balance nostalgia with an updated comedic approach.

The teaser suggests that the sequel will continue the franchise’s tradition of poking fun at the entertainment industry while adapting to the current landscape of blockbuster storytelling. With its mix of familiar characters and fresh perspectives, Spaceballs: The New One is positioning itself as both a continuation and a reinvention.

As anticipation builds ahead of its 2027 release, the film stands as a reminder of how enduring parody can evolve alongside the genres it once mocked.
