Cinco de Mayo Parade Takes Over Downtown Abilene Tonight What to Know

The annual celebration returns Tuesday evening with a brand-new route, dozens of entries and live entertainment for the whole family

The Cinco de Mayo Parade in downtown Abilene returns Tuesday, May 5, and the whole community is welcome. This year’s event marks a fresh chapter for the beloved annual tradition, featuring a new downtown route and around 72 entries. The parade steps off at 6 p.m., and organizers ask participants to line up by 5:30 p.m. near the courthouse at South 2nd Street and Oak.

A new route through downtown

This year’s Cinco de Mayo Parade will be the first to travel a newly mapped downtown path. The procession heads down Pine Street to 6th Street. From there, it loops back along Cypress Street, passing the convention center and the Doubletree hotel before completing the circuit. The updated route gives more of the city center a front-row seat to the festivities.

What to expect along the route

The lineup includes floats, classic cars and lowriders. Ballet Folklorico will perform at points along the route, bringing traditional Mexican dance to the celebration. The Big Country Mariachi will also perform, adding live music and color throughout the evening.

Additionally, food trucks will be stationed along the route for attendees looking to eat while they watch. Among them is Texican, a local favorite known for its tacos. In short, there is something for everyone making the trip downtown.

Can’t make it in person?

For those who cannot attend, KTAB will live-stream the entire parade. Viewers can tune in through the KTAB Plus app or directly at bigcountryhomepage.com. The stream makes it easy to follow along from home without missing any of the action.

The Cinco de Mayo Parade in Abilene has long been a community staple. With a new route and a full evening of entertainment, Tuesday’s edition looks to be one of the more memorable ones yet.
