The power couple stepped out with their eldest daughter at the 2026 Met Gala, offering a rare glimpse into their closely guarded family life
Blue Ivy’s Met Gala appearance on Monday, May 4, was a moment her mother called surreal. Beyoncé and Jay-Z brought their eldest daughter to the 2026 event, with Beyoncé serving as co-chair of the night. For a family that protects its privacy carefully, the red carpet showing offered a rare and meaningful look at the Carters away from the stage.
Blue Ivy’s Met Gala moment and rise as an artist
Blue Ivy Carter was born on Jan. 7, 2012, in New York City. She entered the music world almost immediately. Just two days after her birth, Jay-Z featured her vocals on his song “Glory.” That made her the youngest person ever to appear on a Billboard chart.
By age 9, she had also earned a Grammy. She won the trophy for her role in her mother’s “Brown Skin Girl” music video. That win made her the second-youngest Grammy recipient in history. She additionally took home an MTV Video Music Award, a BET Award and an NAACP Image Award for the same song.
Since then, Blue Ivy has kept building her own resume. In 2020, she narrated the book “Hair Love” by Matthew A. Cherry. In 2022, she performed at the 94th Academy Awards. A year later, she danced alongside her mother during the Renaissance World Tour. Most recently, she voiced a character in the Disney film “Mufasa,” saying the experience was something her younger self never would have believed.
Beyoncé has spoken openly about watching her daughter grow. She noted that Blue Ivy chose the stage herself. She took it seriously, worked hard and earned every moment on it.
The twins: Rumi and Sir Carter
Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed twins Rumi and Sir on June 13, 2017. Before their arrival, Beyoncé announced the pregnancy in February of that year with a widely shared Instagram post. She described the family as being blessed two times over.
Jay-Z has since explained both names. He chose Rumi after the couple’s favorite poet. As for Sir, he said the name simply fit — his son arrived carrying himself that way from the very start.
The twins have appeared publicly only on select occasions. Most recently, on Feb. 8, Rumi and Blue Ivy joined their father on the sidelines of Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Sir did not appear at the game. Jay-Z had also taken his daughters to the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, making it something of a family tradition.
Furthermore, Rumi’s voice appears on Beyoncé’s eighth studio album, “Cowboy Carter.” On the track “Protector,” she asks her mother for a lullaby — a small but memorable moment on a record full of them.
How the Carters approach family life
Beyoncé and Jay-Z married in 2008. Since then, they have worked to give their three children as normal a life as possible. Beyoncé has said she keeps her personal life separate from her public brand. She also makes privacy a priority for all three kids, despite the fame that surrounds them daily.
Jay-Z shares that outlook. In a 2021 interview, he said feeling loved is the most important thing a child can receive. He added that he has no interest in mapping out a predetermined path for his children. Instead, he simply wants them to feel supported — whatever direction they choose.
The 2026 Met Gala appearance with Blue Ivy served as a reminder of that balance. For the Carters, some milestones are worth sharing, even for a family that prefers to keep most of them private.
