The 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture returns to New Orleans from July 3 through 5. This year’s edition is shaping up to be one of the most extraordinary in the event’s history. The Coca-Cola Company presents the festival. The theme this year is “We Love Us,” a declaration of Black joy, resilience and community that runs through every corner of the weekend.
From legendary concert headliners to a deeply moving Aaliyah tribute, 20-plus daytime experiences and a marketplace celebrating Black-owned businesses, the 2026 festival offers far more than a music event. It delivers a full cultural immersion spanning music, entrepreneurship, wellness, food, fashion and storytelling. New Orleans provides the perfect backdrop for all of it.
Friday, July 3: opening night at the Caesars Superdome
The festival opens Friday night with a lineup that blends current hitmakers with one of the most anticipated cultural conversations of the year. Cardi B headlines the evening. She brings her signature high-energy performance to the Superdome stage. Kehlani joins her, riding the momentum of a dominant BET Awards sweep that has made her one of the most talked-about artists of the moment. Latto also performs, continuing to cement her place among hip-hop’s elite.
The night additionally features the IMO Presents: The Look a Live Series. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will also appear in a landmark moderated conversation. Keke Palmer serves as moderator for that session. That pairing alone makes Friday one of the most in-demand evenings of the entire weekend. Danielle Brooks and Kenny Burns host the night.
Saturday, July 4: a night of pure nostalgia and soul
Saturday’s lineup at the Superdome delivers a love letter to R&B royalty. Brandy and Monica share the stage together. Their pairing promises one of the most emotionally charged performances of the summer. Their voices and their history have been woven into the fabric of Black music for decades. Babyface and Patti LaBelle round out the top of the bill. Both artists bring the kind of catalogue-deep performances that only living legends can deliver.
Rising stars Leon Thomas and Josh Levi also join the Saturday lineup. Their presence gives the evening a balance of timeless artistry and fresh energy. Sherri Shepherd and Kenny Burns host, while DJ Mars handles the soundtrack between sets.
Sunday, July 5: a historic tribute closes the weekend
Sunday night carries the weight of history. T.I. opens with a career-spanning performance backed by a live orchestra through a partnership with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. That alone would be enough to anchor a festival closing night. However, Missy Elliott then curates the Aaliyah One in a Million, Forever Tribute. Only Aaliyah’s closest collaborator could design a tribute with that level of intimacy and understanding. The moment promises to be one of the most moving in Essence Festival history.
George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic then deliver a genre-defying finale. Their special guests include Durand Bernarr, Nona Hendryx, Big Freedia, Big Boi, Scarface, Kim Burrell, Trombone Shorty and Savion Glover. Public Enemy and Doug E. Fresh and Friends also take the stage on Sunday. Together, the Sunday lineup creates a multi-generational celebration of Black music’s most enduring voices. LeToya Luckett and Kenny Burns host, with DJ Trauma closing out the night.
Daytime experiences: more than 20 curated activations
The evening concerts represent only part of the Essence Festival experience. During the day, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center hosts more than 20 curated experiences. These span virtually every dimension of Black life and culture. The daytime offerings include the ESSENCE Stage, Beautycon, the ESSENCE Film Festival, the ESSENCE Food and Wine Festival, the New Voices Village, the Podcast Festival, ESSENCE Authors, the Community Impact Hub, Unbothered and Well, the SUEDE Men’s Experience and the Global Black Economic Forum headquarters.
The festival Marketplace also returns. It spotlights Black-owned businesses and gives attendees a direct way to invest in and celebrate Black entrepreneurship alongside the cultural programming.
A festival with roots more than 30 years deep
The ESSENCE Festival of Culture has called New Orleans home for more than three decades. It grew from a celebration of ESSENCE magazine’s 25th anniversary into one of the largest gatherings centered on Black culture anywhere in the world. In 2025, the festival generated more than $321 million in economic impact for New Orleans. It also supported more than 2,400 jobs and produced over $103 million in income for local workers and businesses.
The 2026 theme “We Love Us” captures what the festival has always stood for at its core. It creates a space where Black joy is not just welcomed but celebrated loudly, proudly and without apology. Whether you come for the music, the conversations, the food, the fashion or simply the feeling of community at its most vibrant, New Orleans is the place to be this July 4th weekend.
