Minnesota Vikings linebacker and safety Jamal Adams’ season is likely finished before it even begins. Coach Kevin O’Connell updated Adams’ injury status after the Vikings beat the Giants 13 to 10 in a preseason game today. Adams has a right knee injury. He will get an MRI to confirm how serious it actually is.
What happened during the game
Adams played 11 defensive snaps at MetLife Stadium before leaving the game. He recorded one tackle. He also had an earlier tackle for loss on Giants running back Devin Singletary in the first quarter. His final snap came in pass coverage on a touchdown throw from quarterback Jaxson Dart to wide receiver Malachi Fields. Reporters at the stadium described Adams going down on a non contact play while sprinting to his right in coverage. He then grabbed his knee. He spent an extended period in the medical tent before being carted back to the locker room. O’Connell was seen on the sideline trying to comfort him before he left the field.
What the team has said so far
O’Connell did not confirm a diagnosis. His comments were not encouraging. He said the initial exam does not look good. He added that the team wants to wait for imaging before confirming anything further. Beyond the medical update, O’Connell spoke at length about the impact Adams has already made on the organization in a short amount of time. He described Adams as a source of daily energy who was genuinely carving out a significant role for himself within coordinator Brian Flores’ defense. O’Connell said the team plans to support Adams fully through the process, regardless of what the imaging shows.
Why this moment feels especially tense
The concern here comes from context as much as the injury itself. Adams, 30, has played nine or fewer games in three of his last four seasons. This is not his first health scare at MetLife Stadium specifically. In October 2023, during his return from a 13 month recovery following a torn quad tendon, he suffered a concussion in his very first game back. That game was also against the Giants at that stadium. He rebounded from that setback to play all 17 games for the Raiders last season after shifting from safety to linebacker. He finished with 45 tackles and a sack.

What Adams’ role was supposed to be
Minnesota signed Adams on July 28. The team listed him as a linebacker while continuing to work him at safety throughout training camp. Flores had been lining him up in multiple spots to take advantage of his ability to shift between levels of the defense. That positional flexibility made him an appealing fit for the scheme in the first place. Losing that versatility, even temporarily, would remove one of the more distinctive pieces of Minnesota’s defensive plan heading into the season.
What it means for the Vikings going forward
That question will not have a real answer until the team shares more about the injury. For now, Minnesota has other players who have logged snaps at both levels during camp. Today’s game also marked Kyler Murray’s preseason debut as the team’s named starting quarterback, giving the coaching staff plenty else to evaluate from the opener. Whether Adams’ injury becomes a training camp footnote or a longer term concern is something the team’s next update will need to answer.
