Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson lead an all-star cast in a witty family mystery about farm sheep who take crime-solving into their own hooves
The Sheep Detectives movie opens in theaters this Friday, May 8. It also brings one of the most unexpected ensemble casts of the year. Kyle Balda directs, and Craig Mazin writes the screenplay. Specifically, the story follows a flock of sheep who secretly understand everything their shepherd reads to them. When a mystery strikes the farm, they take charge. As a result, Amazon MGM Studios distributes what is shaping up to be one of the more original family releases of the summer. The film carries a PG rating and opens exclusively in theaters nationwide.
What The Sheep Detectives movie is about
Hugh Jackman plays George, a shepherd with a nightly habit. Each evening, he reads detective novels aloud to his flock. He assumes, of course, that the sheep understand nothing. In fact, however, they understand everything. When a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep immediately act. They follow clues, observe human suspects and work together to solve the case. In doing so, they prove that brilliant crime-solving is not limited to people.
The story blends family warmth with genuine mystery plotting. Moreover, Mazin’s screenplay brings sharp wit to the material throughout. Younger audiences find it accessible, while adults get plenty to enjoy as well. Consequently, the film works equally well as both a comedy and a mystery.
The cast
The Sheep Detectives carries a remarkably deep roster of talent. First, Hugh Jackman leads as George. Emma Thompson, Hong Chau, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon and Tosin Cole also star. In addition, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein and Rhys Darby appear in supporting roles. Together, they form one of the stronger ensembles assembled for a family film in recent years. Indeed, few releases this season can match that level of combined talent.
The creative team
Kyle Balda brings animation experience to the director’s chair. Meanwhile, Craig Mazin the Emmy-winning writer behind Chernobyl and The Last of Us handles the script. That combination, notably, gives the project an unusual creative foundation. Furthermore, Lindsay Doran, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title produce the film. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also serve among the executive producers. Additionally, the film draws from Leonie Swann’s novel Three Bags Full, which already built a dedicated readership before production began.
Why this one stands out
Family films with real mystery plots are relatively rare. As a result, The Sheep Detectives movie fills an interesting gap in the market. It is funny and accessible, yet it also takes its central whodunit seriously. Still, the story never loses its sense of fun. Furthermore, the source material already had fans before the film came together. That built-in audience, therefore, gives the weekend release a strong starting point. Overall, the combination of a beloved novel, a sharp screenplay and a stellar cast makes this one worth seeing on the big screen.
The Sheep Detectives movie earns its PG rating for thematic material, some violent content and brief language. It opens exclusively in theaters on Friday, May 8.
