The Walter Mosley Ghalen book event is set to become one of the most ambitious literary gatherings of 2026. On Thursday, May 28, at 5:30 p.m. PT, Walter Mosley will appear live at The Guild Theater in Sacramento, California. Moreover, the conversation will stream simultaneously into more than 30 Black-owned bookstores nationwide and to virtual audiences joining from home. Furthermore, the event is organized in partnership with the National Association of Black Bookstores, known as NAB2, making it a true community-driven celebration of literature and independent bookselling.

The novel at the center of the evening is Ghalen: A Romance in Black, Mosley’s latest release. Additionally, the event marks a significant moment for Black literary culture by connecting readers in cities across the country through a single shared experience. Consequently, whether attendees are in Sacramento’s Guild Theater, a bookstore in Atlanta, or their living room, they will all be part of the same national conversation.

More than 30 cities and bookstores taking part

The Walter Mosley Ghalen book event stands out for its geographic reach. Participating Black-owned bookstores span major cities from coast to coast. Moreover, the coordinated watch party format gives local communities a meaningful way to engage with a national literary event while supporting their neighborhood bookstores at the same time.

Cities confirmed to participate in the event include Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Washington D.C., Houston, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Philadelphia, among others. Furthermore, each participating bookstore will host an in-store watch party and community gathering during the live broadcast. Consequently, the event functions both as a literary celebration and as a direct act of support for independent Black-owned booksellers across the country.

Source Booksellers in Detroit is among the participating stores. Additionally, readers who cannot attend in person can join virtually from anywhere in the country through the event registration page. Therefore, geographic location is no barrier to being part of this landmark evening.

About Walter Mosley and Ghalen: A Romance in Black

Walter Mosley is one of the most celebrated authors in American literature. He is best known for the Easy Rawlins mystery series and decades of acclaimed fiction that has consistently centered Black life, culture, and experience with depth and authenticity. Moreover, his work has earned him a devoted national readership and widespread recognition across literary and cultural circles.

His new novel, Ghalen: A Romance in Black, continues his legacy of bold and distinctive storytelling. Furthermore, the book has already drawn significant attention ahead of its celebration event for its powerful and resonant narrative.

Why this event matters for Black literary culture

Independent bookstores have long served as anchors for community and culture, particularly in Black communities where they often function as gathering spaces, educational hubs, and platforms for emerging voices. Moreover, events like the Walter Mosley Ghalen book event demonstrate how a single author celebration can expand into a national act of community solidarity.

The hybrid format of the event is itself a meaningful innovation. By streaming one live conversation into dozens of simultaneous watch parties, the event removes the barriers that have historically limited national literary events to a single venue and a single city audience. Furthermore, it creates a model that other authors and organizations can replicate for future national book celebrations.

Mosley’s presence at the center of the event carries additional weight given his stature in American letters. Consequently, his willingness to anchor a community-driven, Black bookstore-centered event sends a clear message about the values he brings to his public presence as an author. Additionally, it reinforces the cultural importance of supporting Black-owned independent booksellers in an era of increasing consolidation in the book industry.

Readers can learn more about the novel and Mosley’s full body of work at Walter Mosley’s official website.
