AMC Announces a New Era for Dead City Season 3

Jun. 03, 2026 / Film / Author: Praise Swint

AMC’s hit spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City is officially returning for its third season, with a premiere date set for July 26, 2026. The new season continues the post-apocalyptic journey of Maggie and Negan as they navigate shifting alliances and rising threats in a fractured Manhattan. With production already underway, the series is preparing for its next major chapter under new creative leadership.

Season 3 sets global premiere spotlight

Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City will make its international debut at the 65th Monte-Carlo TV Festival on June 12, 2026. The first two episodes will open the festival, giving global audiences an early look at the new storyline before its official AMC premiere in July.

The festival placement highlights AMC’s continued push to position the franchise as a major global television event. It also reflects the series’ expanding international appeal as it continues building on one of television’s most recognizable post-apocalyptic universes.

New showrunner takes creative control

A major shift behind the scenes arrives this season as Seth Hoffman steps in as showrunner. Hoffman previously worked within The Walking Dead universe as a writer and co-executive producer on the original series, bringing franchise experience into the leadership role.

He replaces Eli Jorné, who guided the first two seasons of Dead City. Production teams say the transition supports a refreshed creative direction while maintaining continuity with the established storyline. Hoffman has emphasized his focus on expanding character-driven storytelling while elevating the scale of the series.

Cast expansion brings new characters to Manhattan

Season 3 introduces several new cast members who expand the post-apocalyptic world of Dead City. Jimmi Simpson joins as Dillard, adding a new dynamic to the shifting power structure in Manhattan. Raúl Castillo plays Luis, while Aimee Garcia joins the series as Renata.

These additions signal a broader narrative scope as the city’s fractured communities continue to evolve. Maggie and Negan remain central to the story, but the new characters are expected to challenge their decisions and reshape alliances in unpredictable ways.

The expanded cast also reflects the series’ ongoing effort to deepen its universe beyond the original core characters. Each new role adds another layer of tension to an already unstable environment where survival depends on shifting loyalties.

Production moves forward in Boston

Filming for Season 3 is currently underway in Boston, continuing the production strategy used in earlier seasons. The city serves as a stand-in for the ruined landscape of Manhattan, allowing the show to build large-scale environments that reflect its post-apocalyptic tone.

Production teams are focusing on expanding set design and action sequences to match the growing scope of the storyline. The new season aims to heighten conflict while exploring deeper emotional stakes between its lead characters.

Expanding the Walking Dead universe

The Walking Dead franchise continues to grow with multiple spinoffs and related projects. Dead City remains one of the key entries in the expanded universe, focusing on the complex relationship between Maggie and Negan as they navigate survival in a collapsed society.

Season 3 is expected to build on the escalating conflict introduced in Season 2, where competing factions battled for control of Manhattan. With new leadership and new characters, the upcoming season aims to push the story into more unpredictable territory while maintaining its survival-driven foundation.

As anticipation builds ahead of its July premiere, fans can expect a darker, more expansive continuation of the series’ evolving storyline.
