A shooting at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan, left two people dead and three others wounded on the afternoon of July 3. Police confirmed the incident began around 2 p.m. near the mall’s interior. The Dearborn Police Department placed the mall on lockdown and asked the public to stay away from the area while officers secured the scene and investigators worked.
The mall sits near Evergreen Road and Michigan Avenue. Henry Ford Medical Center Fairlane, located near the mall, also went into lockdown as a precaution following the shooting.
What police and witnesses said about the shooting
Dearborn police confirmed the shooting in a public statement, calling it an active and ongoing investigation. Authorities asked residents and visitors to avoid the area while officers processed the scene. No suspect custody status was confirmed at the time of reporting.
Sources told Fox 2 that the shooting appeared to be targeted. Two individuals were directly involved. An innocent bystander also sustained a gunshot wound during the incident. Three people in total were shot inside the mall. Two of those individuals died. The third sustained injuries of unknown severity at the time of reporting.
A witness named Weston Fantroy told Local 4 that he had been shopping for a birthday gift for his daughter when he heard what sounded like four or five gunshots. He saw a commotion, feared for his safety and ran outside. Social media video captured shoppers rushing toward exits as sounds consistent with gunfire played in the background.
Dearborn mayor responds to the shooting
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud issued a statement on social media this afternoon, asking people to stay clear of Fairlane Mall while police secured and investigated the scene. He offered no additional details beyond the request to avoid the area.
The Dearborn Police Department said additional information would be released as it became available. The investigation remained active through the afternoon. Police made no announcement about a suspect being in custody or a motive at the time of reporting.
