Midland, Texas shooting ends with suspect dead, 11 hurt
A morning shooting on West Wall Street left one person dead and sparked an hours-long standoff
A shooting in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning left one person dead and 11 total victims affected, according to city officials. The situation ended after an hours-long standoff, with police confirming the suspect was found dead at the scene.
How the shooting unfolded
Police received the first call around 8:03 AM and dispatched fire crews five minutes later. Officers responded to reports of an active shooter in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. Investigators believe the shooting started in southeast Midland before moving across the southern part of the city.
Officers heard gunfire coming from a building and worked to secure and clear the surrounding area. The standoff that followed lasted several hours before authorities confirmed the situation had ended and the suspect was deceased. Officials have not said how the suspect died or released information about a possible motive.
Hospital response and victim updates
Midland Memorial Hospital received nine of the victims connected to the shooting. Four went into surgery while five others were listed in stable condition. The hospital went into lockdown shortly after 8:20 AM due to the active shooter situation. The main campus lockdown lifted by 10:10 AM, though the emergency department remained locked down afterward as a precaution.
Hospital officials asked the public to avoid the area unless they needed emergency care, citing the ongoing nature of the situation at the time.
What officials have confirmed
Mayor Lori Blong confirmed during a news conference that 11 people were affected in total, with one confirmed dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers were reported injured. The identities of the victims and the suspect have not been released.
The City of Midland confirmed the active shooter incident has been resolved, though the scene remains active. Road closures in the area are expected to continue while the investigation moves forward.
A city with painful history
The shooting brings back memories of a 2019 attack in the Midland-Odessa area, when a gunman killed seven people and injured more than two dozen others. Midland, home to roughly 140,000 people in the heart of Texas’s oil region, now faces another investigation into a mass shooting that has left residents on edge.
