The Michael Jackson biopic arrives on digital June 9 with a worldwide box office record within reach
The Michael Jackson biopic Michael arrives on digital streaming on Tuesday, June 9, giving fans their first chance to watch the film at home while it continues its push toward one of the biggest records in music film history.
Where and how to watch it at home
Lionsgate confirmed that Michael will be available for purchase on premium video on demand for $24.99 starting June 9. The film will be available through Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies and TV. Viewers who prefer to rent rather than buy can expect a 48-hour rental option at around $19.99. The film carries a PG-13 rating.
What the film covers
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael opens with a 10-year-old Jackson, played by Juliano Valde, and follows his rise to fame alongside his brothers in the Jackson 5. The story then picks up with Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, portraying the adult version of the pop star through the release of Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad. The film ends in 1988 as Jackson embarks on his Bad world tour.
Colman Domingo and Nia Long play Jackson’s parents Joe and Katherine. Miles Teller portrays longtime manager John Branca.
Jaafar Jackson’s performance is already drawing attention
Critics and audiences have pointed to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal as a central reason the film has connected so strongly with viewers. Reviewers noted that his dance movements and overall physical commitment to the role go well beyond surface-level impression. Awards observers have already placed him in early conversations for best actor consideration heading into the next awards cycle.
How close is the film to breaking the record?
Michael has earned roughly $346.6 million domestically and $514.1 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to around $860.7 million as of its sixth weekend in theaters. The all-time music biopic record belongs to Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 Queen film that earned $911 million globally and won four Academy Awards including best actor for Rami Malek.
That means Michael needs around $50 million more to take the top spot. The film finished at number four at the domestic box office on the weekend of May 29 through 31, bringing in nearly $12 million. It added another $6 million across the following weekdays.
The biggest opportunity still ahead is Japan, where the film has not yet opened. Given that the 2009 documentary Michael Jackson’s This Is It earned $57 million in Japan alone, industry projections suggest Michael will surpass Bohemian Rhapsody‘s global record after its July 12 Japanese release.
Michael is still playing in theaters nationwide.
