The Joe Mixon NFL career appears to be nearing its final chapter.
According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, Mixon has told former Cincinnati Bengals teammates that he does not expect to play again.
However, he has not officially submitted retirement paperwork.
“No, he has not filed his retirement papers,” Wilson said. “He has told former teammates from the Bengals that his career is over.”
The report suggests Mixon is preparing for life after football following a difficult injury setback.
Foot injury changed Mixon’s football future
Mixon’s career was affected by a serious foot injury before the 2025 NFL season.
The veteran running back required surgery after the injury became worse.
However, the procedure improved his overall health and daily life.
Wilson explained that Mixon is in a better physical condition now, even though returning to football may not be realistic.
“The good news is that Joe is healthier,” Wilson said.
He added that the surgery helped Mixon with normal activities outside of football.
Although there is still a small chance of a comeback, Wilson believes retirement is the most likely outcome.
Rumors surrounding Mixon’s injury addressed
The injury also created several rumors online.
However, Wilson quickly dismissed one of the most unusual claims.
He said reports that Mixon accidentally shot himself in the foot were completely false.
“He did not shoot himself in the foot,” Wilson said. “That was a ridiculous urban legend.”
Instead, Wilson said one explanation involved Mixon possibly dropping a weight on his foot.
Mixon reportedly tried to receive treatment after the injury occurred. Unfortunately, the issue continued and forced him to miss the entire season.
Mixon built a strong Bengals legacy
Mixon joined the NFL after the Bengals selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
During his seven seasons in Cincinnati, he became one of the team’s most productive running backs.
Additionally, he played a major role in the Bengals’ run to Super Bowl LVI during the 2021 season.
Throughout his time with Cincinnati, Mixon became a key part of the team’s offense.
After the 2023 season, the Bengals moved on from Mixon.
He later signed with the Houston Texans and continued his NFL career before the injury interrupted his playing future.
Veteran running back prepares for next chapter
While Mixon has not officially announced retirement, the latest reports indicate that his NFL journey may be finished.
At 29 years old, Mixon leaves behind a successful career filled with major achievements.
Ultimately, his legacy includes playoff success, strong performances, and years as one of Cincinnati’s top offensive players.
