Giannis Antetokounmpo has responded to critics who questioned his choice of partner, saying honesty and family have always mattered more than status or appearance. The NBA star said he would make the same decision again because the qualities he values cannot be measured by fame.
The two time MVP recently addressed online comments suggesting he could have pursued a celebrity or fashion model instead of marrying Mariah Riddlesprigger. Rather than focus on public opinion, Giannis explained that he looked for someone who would always be genuine and put family first.
Giannis values honesty above everything
Speaking on the AnesTea podcast, Giannis said he wanted a partner who would tell him the truth, even when those conversations were difficult. He added that trust has always been the foundation of their relationship.
He also praised Mariah for helping raise their four children with strong values. According to Giannis, her ability to keep their family grounded is far more meaningful than public attention or celebrity status. Those qualities continue to shape the life they have built together.

Their relationship grew over time
The couple first crossed paths during the 2014 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Giannis admired Mariah’s personality from the beginning, but their relationship did not start immediately.
At the time, Mariah was already in a relationship, so she declined his interest. They later reconnected through social media and gradually became closer. As they spent more time together, Giannis saw how naturally she connected with his parents and relatives. That strengthened his belief that she belonged in his family’s future.
Family remains the priority
Giannis and Mariah married in Greece in 2024 after nearly a decade together. Since then, they have focused on raising their four children while balancing the demands of professional basketball.
Mariah, a former Rice University volleyball player, has largely stayed away from the spotlight. Even so, Giannis has repeatedly credited her with bringing stability to their home and helping their children grow up with a strong sense of family.
As Giannis begins the next stage of his career with the Miami Heat following his offseason departure from the Milwaukee Bucks, he says his priorities have not changed. Basketball may define his profession, but he believes his greatest success begins with the family waiting for him at home.
