Music legend Stevie Wonder is taking a former girlfriend to court in an effort to remove her from a Los Angeles home he owns, according to newly reported legal documents.
TMZ reported on October 22 that Wonder is suing Carmen Efferson to evict her from the property, where she allegedly has lived rent-free for nearly four decades.
According to the legal documents obtained by TMZ, Efferson has occupied the home since July 1988 under a verbal agreement. The arrangement reportedly did not include a written lease or monthly rent payments.
Wonder now argues that the arrangement has run its course and wants Efferson to leave the property.
Stevie Wonder challenges decades-long housing arrangement
The dispute centers on an alleged agreement that allowed Efferson to remain in Wonder’s Los Angeles property without paying rent.
According to TMZ, the documents state that the arrangement began in July 1988. The reported agreement was verbal, meaning the parties did not have a written lease outlining the terms of the arrangement.
Wonder is now asking the court to help end the arrangement and regain possession of the property.
The lawsuit puts a decades-long living situation under legal scrutiny. However, the allegations described in the report have not been established through a court ruling.
Legal dispute puts Wonder’s private life in focus
Wonder, known for classic hits including “Superstition” and “Isn’t She Lovely,” has maintained a lengthy career in music spanning several decades.
The latest legal dispute concerns property ownership and a former personal relationship rather than his music career.
Details about Efferson’s current response to the lawsuit were not included in the report. The court will determine the next steps as the case proceeds.
For now, the dispute raises questions about how a long-standing informal housing arrangement can be brought to an end when the property owner seeks possession of the home.
Further details may emerge as the legal proceedings continue.
