Patrick Mahomes is fully cleared for Kansas City Chiefs training camp, and the news arrives with a personal story attached that goes well beyond football. Quarterbacks and rookies reported to Missouri Western State’s campus on July 24, where head coach Andy Reid opened his press conference with the update fans had been waiting months to hear.
Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14. Under a typical recovery timeline, the injury would have forced the three-time Super Bowl MVP to miss the start of the 2026 season. Instead, a Week 1 return against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football now appears realistic.
How Mahomes describes his physical recovery
Mahomes said he feels stronger than ever in terms of strength and lifting, describing his overall condition as amazing heading into camp. He also expressed genuine excitement simply to be back playing football again. After months of staring at cinderblock walls during daily rehab sessions in Kansas City, he said returning to the practice field with his teammates would be a welcome change of pace.

The toughest part of Mahomes’ recovery had nothing to do with football
When asked about the hardest mental hurdle of his rehab, Mahomes did not point to missed games or lost playing time. Instead, he said the early stretch of recovery was hardest because he could not get up and chase his three kids around, Sterling, 5, Bronze, 3, and Golden, 1. He described himself as someone who always wants to stay active with his children, making that early limitation especially difficult.
Once he regained enough mobility to be physically present with his kids again, Mahomes said that shift became a major source of motivation. Being able to attend Bronze’s T-ball games or Sterling’s soccer games helped carry him through the rest of the process. He credited his mindset and the people around him for keeping him confident he would make it back to training camp on schedule.
A busy offseason despite the injury
Even while rehabbing, Mahomes and his wife Brittany kept a full offseason schedule. The couple attended teammate Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s wedding in New York City and spent significant time with their children. Video from Sterling’s fifth birthday party in February showed Brittany going down a slide with Bronze and Sterling while Mahomes watched from the side.
Photos Brittany shared from a March family vacation showed Mahomes wearing a leg sleeve, which had disappeared from photos by April. For training camp, Mahomes plans to wear a knee brace instead, though he said the choice reflects personal comfort rather than a medical requirement. He wore a similar brace during his college playing days and said he still feels capable of moving naturally with it on.
What comes next for Mahomes and the Chiefs
Reid confirmed Mahomes has been cleared to participate fully in every period of training camp, though the team plans to monitor him closely day by day. The Chiefs are looking to move past a difficult 2025 season, and a healthy Mahomes heading into September gives Kansas City real reason for optimism entering the new year.
