LeBron James will miss the Philadelphia 76ers’ today matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks as the team manages his lower back and sciatica. His absence comes as Philadelphia begins its first back-to-back stretch of the season.
The 41-year-old star was downgraded to out for the game. The team has not publicly reported a new injury flare-up, making the decision appear focused on managing his condition over the long season.
Why LeBron James will miss the game
Philadelphia listed James as out because of lower back and sciatica management. The Sixers will face Milwaukee today before hosting the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.
The back-to-back schedule gives the team an early opportunity to manage the veteran’s workload. James previously missed the first 14 games of last season with sciatica, a condition involving irritation of the sciatic nerve.
The nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down the legs. Symptoms can include pain and discomfort that affect movement. However, the available reports do not confirm that James is experiencing a new flare-up this season.
James had discussed the team’s plans before the weekend. When asked about his availability for both games on Thursday, he said the team would assess the schedule and manage his status accordingly.
James has made an early impact
Despite appearing in only two games this season, James has already contributed across several areas for Philadelphia.
He is averaging 15.5 points per game and leads the Sixers in rebounds, with 9.5 per game, and assists, with 6.0 per game.
His absence means Philadelphia will need contributions from its other players against Milwaukee. The team will then have another game less than 24 hours later, making player availability an important consideration.
The Sixers have not indicated that James will miss Sunday’s game against Detroit. His status for that matchup remains separate from today’s confirmed absence.
Another Sixers player remains questionable
Forward Dean Wade also remains questionable as he continues to deal with a left ankle sprain. Wade has yet to make his debut with Philadelphia.
The team’s weekend schedule could test its depth early in the season. James’ workload management will also remain a point of attention given his age and previous experience with sciatica.
For now, the immediate update is clear. James will sit out against Milwaukee, while Philadelphia prepares for two games in two nights.
