A 58-year-old Chicago man is facing multiple felony charges in connection with the death of one woman and the alleged sexual assault and kidnapping of another on the city’s South Side. Police identified the suspect as Jerry Powe, who was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 22.
According to Chicago police, a 36-year-old woman was found dead inside a residence in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue. Investigators identified Powe as the suspect in the case. He is also accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman at the same location.
Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding either incident.
What police say happened
Police said officers arrested Powe at approximately 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The arrest came about an hour after the 36-year-old woman was found with fatal injuries inside the residence in the East Chatham area.
Powe faces charges that include first-degree murder and murder involving a strong probability of death or injury. He is also charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon and one count of aggravated kidnapping involving harm.
The allegations involving the second woman concern an incident at the same location, according to police.
The charges outline the accusations against Powe. They do not establish guilt, and the investigation’s full circumstances have not been made public.
Details remain limited
Authorities have not shared information about what led to the alleged incidents. Police also have not released additional details about the women or explained the circumstances that brought officers to the residence.
The available reports do not identify a motive or describe the sequence of events beyond the discovery of the woman’s body and Powe’s subsequent arrest.
As the case proceeds, further information may emerge through court proceedings or updates from law enforcement.
Court hearing scheduled
Powe was scheduled to appear at a detention hearing today. The hearing is the next reported step in the legal process.
For now, police have confirmed the charges and the location connected to the case, but many questions remain unanswered. The investigation concerns the death of a 36-year-old woman and allegations involving a second woman, with additional details still pending from authorities.
