A deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left families and the wider community grieving after three children and a teacher were killed Thursday, Oct. 15.
Police said the suspected shooter, a 16-year-old boy, entered the school after firing at a locked door. A community member confronted the teenager inside the building and fatally shot him before officers arrived.
The children killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to a hospital, according to reports citing authorities.
How the shooting unfolded
The first emergency call came at approximately 12:59 p.m. local time. The caller reported that someone was firing a long gun at a vehicle outside the school.
Additional calls soon alerted dispatchers that an armed person had entered the building. Police Chief Mike Krantz said the suspect fired at a locked door to gain entry.
Officers arrived at about 1:02 p.m. and quickly learned the suspect was down. Authorities have said a community member saw the teenager enter the school, followed him inside and confronted him.
Some reports identified the weapon as a shotgun, while police publicly described it as a long gun. Investigators have not publicly established the suspect’s motive or confirmed whether he had a connection to the school.
Community member intervenes
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the person who confronted the gunman, describing the intervention as heroic while recognizing the emotional weight of such an experience.
Authorities have not publicly identified the community member. Reports have suggested the person may have been a parent, but that detail has not been officially confirmed.
The response brought a swift end to the attack, though the community was left facing the loss of young students and a teacher.
Bend gathers to grieve
Hundreds of people gathered at a candlelight vigil Thursday evening to mourn the victims. Attendees shared prayers and songs, while flowers, candles and messages were placed near the school.
Bend-La Pine Schools canceled classes and school activities Friday as the community began to process the tragedy.
Questions remain as investigation continues
Authorities have not publicly confirmed how the teenager obtained the firearm or what led to the shooting. Those questions remain part of the ongoing investigation.
The attack has renewed attention on school safety and gun access. Oregon law generally prohibits people under 18 from purchasing firearms, while certain exceptions allow minors to possess firearms in specific circumstances.
For now, families and residents are mourning the victims as investigators work to establish the circumstances behind the attack.
