Deborah Ayorinde is stepping into a complex new role with STARZ’s upcoming drama Fightland, where she plays Joy Marshall, a woman caught between family loyalty, love, and a dangerous criminal world.
The series combines boxing, crime, and revenge while exploring the personal struggles behind the violence. Set in London, Fightland follows former heavyweight champion Maduka “Duke” Kilroy as he returns home after spending eight years in a U.S. prison.
Duke believes someone close to him played a role in his downfall. His search for answers pulls him back into a world filled with broken relationships, criminal alliances, and unresolved conflicts.
Ayorinde’s Joy Marshall becomes a key part of that journey. Her character faces difficult choices while dealing with her family’s criminal history and her complicated connection with Duke.

Ayorinde said she immediately connected with Joy after reading the script.
The actress explained that Joy stood out because of her complexity and vulnerability. Instead of creating a perfect character, the series presents someone trying to understand herself while navigating painful circumstances.
The role challenged Ayorinde because Joy searches for identity through the people around her.
The actress said she approached the character without judgment. She focused on understanding what it would feel like for someone who struggles to find confidence and purpose within her own life.
Fightland gave Ayorinde a different acting experience
Throughout her career, Ayorinde has portrayed several powerful characters across television and film. Her previous projects include Harriet, Fatherhood, and Girls Trip.
She also earned recognition for her performance as Lucky Emory in Amazon Prime Video’s horror drama Them, which earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
However, Joy Marshall offered a different challenge.
Ayorinde explained that many of her previous roles featured strong characters who had clear answers and powerful personalities. With Joy, she explored vulnerability and the idea that it is acceptable to struggle.
The actress said playing Joy reminded her that characters do not always need to be heroes or have every solution.
50 Cent supports STARZ’s Fightland production
Fightland is executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who continues to expand his television career through projects focused on crime and drama.
Ayorinde praised 50 Cent’s involvement and said he showed support for the cast and crew during production.
She explained that filming the ambitious series required significant effort because the team had to balance emotional scenes, action sequences, and boxing elements within a demanding schedule.
According to Ayorinde, 50 Cent’s visit to the set helped motivate the team during the final stages of production.
Family remains at the center of Fightland
Beyond boxing and crime, Ayorinde believes family serves as the heart of Fightland.
The actress said family creates some of the strongest emotional connections because those relationships can bring both love and conflict.

STARZ prepares for Fightland premiere
STARZ’s Fightland will premiere on Friday, July 31, at midnight on the STARZ app.
The series will also debut on STARZ’s television channel at 8 p.m. ET/PT in the United States.
