Mahershala Ali has closed the book on Blade. Marvel first announced him for the role at San Diego Comic-Con seven years ago. Now the actor confirms he no longer has any involvement with the long-delayed project and has fully moved on.
Ali addressed the situation directly in a new interview with GQ. The timing lines up with the release of his upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. He explained that after nearly three decades in the industry, he has learned to accept what is meant for him and what is not. He said the Blade project simply was not meant to happen. If Marvel had wanted to move forward, he added, the film would already exist. He said he is ready to leave the Blade questions behind entirely. Those questions, he explained, belong to Marvel to answer, not him.
What led to Ali’s exit from Blade
Marvel cast Ali as Blade in 2019, riding the momentum of Avengers: Endgame into an ambitious new slate of films. His version of the character even made an off-screen end-credits cameo in Eternals in 2021. From there, the project stalled. Multiple director changes followed, along with repeated script rewrites, and years of delays never produced a finished film.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also addressed the situation publicly. He admitted on a recent podcast appearance that failing to get the Ali-led Blade film off the ground made him feel like a significant failure. Feige explained that Marvel wanted the film to feel genuinely distinctive rather than a simple retread of familiar vampire-hunter tropes. As a result, the studio never reached the confidence needed to move forward during production.

How Ali is channeling that experience into new work
Ali’s new film reunites him with Bassam Tariq, who previously signed on to direct Blade before that version of the project collapsed. Ali wrote the script himself, drawing on personal experience to tell the story of a trained hitman confronting a crisis of faith while trying to protect his family.
Meanwhile, the physical training Ali completed for Blade found a new home in this project instead. That included stunt work and sword choreography he had spent months preparing. He described the experience as creatively redeeming in its own way, even without Blade ever making it to screen. Overall, he holds no regrets about how things unfolded, framing the collapse of Blade as the very reason this new film came together at all.
What comes next for Blade in the MCU
Marvel has not officially confirmed the character is gone from future plans. However, Wesley Snipes recently reprised his classic take on the role in Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel is also building out its supernatural corner of the universe through Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider. Because of that momentum, many expect Blade to return in some form eventually. Whether that means recasting the role entirely or bringing Snipes back for a longer stretch remains an open question for Marvel to answer.
