The Guardians completed the deal on Monday, sending catching prospect Jacob Cozart to the Angels in exchange for Adell. Cleveland made the move as teams across Major League Baseball raced to strengthen their rosters before the 6 p.m. ET deadline.
The trade gives the Guardians a proven power bat with postseason experience while the Angels add another promising young player to their farm system.
Guardians add Jo Adell’s power and defensive ability
Adell entered the league with high expectations after the Angels selected him in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft. The outfielder spent years developing into one of baseball’s most recognized young talents.
After several difficult seasons early in his career, Adell found his rhythm in 2025. He delivered a breakout campaign by hitting 37 home runs and recording 98 RBIs across 152 games.
His production helped establish him as a dangerous power threat, especially when he makes consistent contact. Although his home run numbers have declined during the 2026 season, Adell continues to show impressive bat speed and offensive potential.
The Guardians are hoping a change of scenery can help him regain the form that made him one of baseball’s most exciting young players.
Jo Adell trade gives Cleveland a versatile outfielder
Beyond his offensive abilities, Adell brings defensive value to Cleveland’s roster.
The 27-year-old has played all three outfield positions during his seven seasons in the majors. However, his strongest fit appears to be in right field, where his athleticism and throwing ability can make an impact.
Adell also delivered one of the most memorable defensive moments of his career earlier this season. On April 4, he robbed three home runs in a single game against the Seattle Mariners, showing the range and instincts that made him a highly rated prospect.
Despite his defensive highlights, Adell has also experienced struggles in the field. On June 2, a ball bounced off his glove and resulted in a four-base error.
The Guardians believe his overall defensive upside and offensive potential make him a valuable addition for the second half of the season.
Angels receive catching prospect Jacob Cozart
In exchange for Adell, the Angels acquired Jacob Cozart, a Minor League catcher ranked as the Guardians’ No. 18 prospect.
Cozart represents a long-term investment for Los Angeles as the organization continues to build its future roster. The young catcher has impressed scouts with his potential behind the plate and gives the Angels another promising piece for their farm system.
The trade also continues an active deadline period for Los Angeles. The Angels previously moved starting pitcher José Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays and left-handed reliever Brent Suter to the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
To make room for Adell on their 40-man roster, the Guardians designated infielder Juan Brito for assignment.

The Guardians entered the deadline looking for ways to improve their roster, and adding Adell gives them another offensive option for the stretch run.
