Angel Reese has become one of the most marketable athletes in women’s basketball, but unlike many of her peers, her business mindset was not built through endorsement deals, NIL opportunities or social media fame. It started at home.
During an appearance on Michelle Obama’s podcast, Reese opened up about her rise to stardom, the sacrifices behind her journey and why she always believed basketball could not be her only identity. When Obama praised her business savvy and asked where it came from, Reese did not hesitate. She credited her mother, an independent single parent who raised her and her brother, as the person who made everything possible. Reese said she knew early on that earning a scholarship was her only realistic path to college, since paying out of pocket was never an option for her mother.
Why Reese built her brand for her mom
That answer reveals a lot about Reese’s approach to success. Long before she became a national champion at LSU or one of the faces of the WNBA, Reese understood that basketball represented opportunity. Earning a scholarship was not just about chasing a dream. It was about easing the burden on the woman who raised her.
That perspective eventually became the blueprint for everything Reese has built since. As her basketball career took off, so did her popularity. Rather than letting fame happen naturally, she made a deliberate decision to turn it into something sustainable. Having watched her mother work so hard, Reese did not want that effort to go to waste, so she continued building a brand off the court to make sure the sacrifice paid off.
She said that mindset took shape once she transferred to LSU, where she had already been posting about her love of fashion on Instagram. She described her genuine interest in style and self-expression as something she wanted to turn into a lasting identity outside of basketball, calling it something that mattered deeply to her from early on.
How that same mindset shapes Reese’s personal standards
That same approach extends into Reese’s personal life. Speaking candidly about dating, the three-time WNBA All-Star has previously described having high standards, though not for the reasons many people assume. She said her standards reflect how she lives her own life, and that anyone meeting her expectations on that level has a real chance with her.
Money is not what she is looking for. Reese explained that she values genuine effort over financial gestures someone cannot actually afford, comparing it to buying an expensive designer bag once without the means to do it again. Her point was simple: know what you are actually getting into before making a gesture you cannot sustain.
Reese’s mindset may be the biggest takeaway from her conversation with Obama. The endorsement deals, WNBA stardom and growing business portfolio often grab the headlines, but none of it was ever the actual goal. It is the result of a mindset shaped by a single mother who taught her daughter to think beyond the next game.
