Whitney Houston is officially getting the Barbie treatment.
Mattel has created a new Whitney Houston Barbie inspired by one of the singer’s most memorable eras. The doll features her signature curly hair, colorful outfit and a microphone accessory.
However, the project took decades to reach the shelves.
According to Houston’s sister-in-law, negotiations with Mattel lasted about 20 years. The talks reportedly included several attempts to bring the singer’s legacy to the iconic doll franchise.
Whitney Houston Barbie Honors Her Iconic Look
The new doll draws inspiration from Houston’s appearance in the music video for “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).”
Mattel recreated several details from the singer’s famous look.
The doll features a violet top, statement earrings and detailed shoes. Her curly hairstyle also pays tribute to the era that helped define Houston’s image.
A microphone completes the look.
The design aims to capture a major moment in Houston’s career.
Whitney Houston Once Considered Her Own Barbie
The idea of a Whitney Houston Barbie is not entirely new.
Houston reportedly discussed the possibility with Mattel years ago. The conversations followed the success of her 1992 film The Bodyguard.
According to the report, Houston liked the idea of having a doll inspired by her.
However, her busy schedule made it difficult to devote enough time to the project. As a result, the idea did not move forward at the time.
Mattel Celebrates Whitney Houston’s Legacy
The Whitney Houston Barbie arrives shortly after what would have been the singer’s 63rd birthday.
The release also comes as fans mark 40 years since the beginning of her career.
Houston’s legacy has continued to grow since her death in 2012. She has also received major posthumous recognition, including a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mattel said it wanted to honor Houston’s lasting influence on music and culture.
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” Inspired Generations
The Barbie’s design pays tribute to one of Houston’s biggest hits.
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” appeared as the lead single from her second studio album.
The song eventually reached No. 1 in 17 countries.
It also sold more than 18 million copies worldwide. The hit became the best-selling single by a female solo artist during the 1980s.
The song remains one of Houston’s most recognizable recordings.
