Angel Reese is having a career year on the boards, but her jump shot keeps letting her down.
The Atlanta Dream forward is averaging a career high 15.8 points a game and has already logged 22 double doubles through 32 games. She has a real shot at breaking her personal best of 26 double doubles before the regular season ends. Still, her shooting numbers keep pulling her production back down to earth.
After a stretch following the All Star break where Reese shot close to 50% from the field, her efficiency collapsed again over her last three outings. She averaged 11.7 points per game while shooting just 28.2% from the field, 20% from three point range and 66.7% from the free throw line.
The slide started Aug. 7 against the Washington Mystics, when Reese went 1 for 12 from the field. She rebounded two days later against Toronto with a 7 for 14 shooting night that produced 20 points. Then on Thursday against the Connecticut Sun she struggled again, scoring eight points on 3 for 13 shooting.
Fans and analysts noticed the swing once shooting data from those three games started circulating online. The inconsistency has become one of the bigger storylines around Reese as Atlanta pushes toward the playoffs.
Reese keeps dominating on the glass
Whatever is happening with her shot, Reese has not let it slow her rebounding. Over that same three game stretch, she still averaged 15 rebounds a night.
Thursday against Connecticut fit the pattern. Reese missed most of her attempts but grabbed 15 rebounds and set a new Atlanta franchise record for rebounds in a single season. She has since pushed her season total to 384 boards. Teammate Naz Hillmon sits a distant second on the roster with 141 rebounds, and Reese now leads the WNBA rebounding race by nine boards over Jessica Sheppard despite playing one fewer game.
The Connecticut game also included a hard foul. Sun forward Aaliyah Edwards made contact with Reese around the head area while contesting a second quarter layup attempt, a play that was upgraded on review. Reese stayed on her feet and had a heated exchange with Edwards before play resumed. Atlanta went on to win comfortably, and the play did not come up during the team’s postgame media session.

A playoff picture taking shape
Atlanta and Indiana enter the stretch run with matching 21-12 records and matching two game win streaks, putting the Dream in fourth place and the Fever in fifth. A first round meeting between the two teams looks increasingly likely, and it would be Reese’s first taste of playoff basketball.
Reese spent her first two professional seasons with a rebuilding Chicago Sky team before Atlanta traded for her, and she has been open about wanting a real shot at the postseason. A first round series against Caitlin Clark and the Fever would put extra attention on how her shooting numbers hold up once the games matter most.
