Jalen Rose Brings Back-to-School Support to Detroit Students

Jalen Rose is helping Detroit students start the new school year with confidence, resources and a fresh start.

The Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in Detroit welcomed students and families Thursday for a special back-to-school community event.

The Back-To-School Bash was presented by SNIPES and Amazon, with support from PUMA and McDonald’s All American Games. The event was part of SNIPES’ 2026 Pull Up Fresh back-to-school campaign.

The celebration focused on giving students more than just a reason to be excited about returning to class. It also connected families with community resources and provided supplies students can use throughout the school year.

Jalen Rose celebrates Detroit students

Former NBA star Jalen Rose made a special appearance at the event, joining students as they prepared for the 2026-27 school year.

Rose founded the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in 2011. The tuition-free charter school serves students in Detroit and focuses on academics, leadership and preparing young people for life after high school.

The academy has also continued expanding its community outreach. Recent initiatives have included efforts to provide food and other resources to Detroit families.

The Back-To-School Bash offered another opportunity to put that community-focused mission into action.

SNIPES and PUMA provide school supplies

SNIPES and PUMA planned to provide up to 400 students with backpacks, school supplies and additional giveaways during the event.

The effort is part of SNIPES’ larger Pull Up Fresh campaign, which encourages students to approach the new school year with confidence and personal style.

The campaign also features DJ Khaled and JT and highlights the importance of showing up ready for a new school year.

For Detroit families, the local activation brought that message directly into the community.

Jalen Rose Leadership Academy focuses on opportunity

The event comes as the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy works toward an even larger future for Detroit students.

The school has announced plans connected to a $20 million capital campaign that would transform the former Henry Ford Health Kingswood Hospital site into a new high school campus.

The project is expected to expand the academy’s reach and create additional educational opportunities for Detroit students. The existing JRLA building is also expected to transition into a middle school serving grades 6 through 8.

Rose has consistently connected the academy’s mission to giving young people the tools they need to become leaders in their communities.

Back-to-school event gives Detroit students a fresh start

The Back-To-School Bash gave students an opportunity to celebrate before another school year begins.

With new backpacks, school supplies, giveaways and support from community partners, the event aimed to make the transition back to school a little easier for families.

More importantly, the gathering reinforced a message that has remained central to Rose’s work in Detroit: Students deserve access to opportunities that can help them build successful futures.
