The two rappers have a long history of tension. Now, Ross is using 50’s own argument to make a point about veteran artists staying active in the culture.
Rick Ross Responds to 50 Cent
On Aug. 23, Ross shared his response on Instagram. He also tagged 50 Cent, making it clear who he was addressing.
Ross disagreed with the idea that hip-hop is mainly a young person’s game. He pointed to Southern rap legends as examples of artists who can continue performing regardless of age.
Ross specifically mentioned Bun B, who recently took the stage. He also brought up late rapper Pimp C, arguing that fans would have continued supporting him if he were still alive.
For Ross, age should not determine whether an artist belongs in hip-hop.
50 Cent Says Hip-Hop Is Connected to Youth
Ross’ comments came after 50 Cent discussed the subject during a conversation with Ebro Darden at Joe and Donell Jones’ VERZUZ event on Aug. 20.
50 argued that hip-hop’s connection to youth culture makes it difficult for older rappers to remain at the center of the genre.
The rapper also acknowledged that his own music career has slowed down. In recent years, he has focused more heavily on television, film and his business ventures.
50 said his occasional music appearances allow him to remind fans that he can still deliver when he chooses to record.
Rick Ross Says Age Should Not Matter
Ross took a different position.
The Maybach Music Group founder argued that artists should continue making music if audiences still want to hear them.
His point is simple. If an artist remains relevant to fans and brings something unique to the culture, age should not be a reason to stop.
That argument challenges the idea that hip-hop has a strict expiration date for its biggest stars.
The Debate Over Hip-Hop Longevity
The conversation between Ross and 50 highlights a larger debate in rap. Hip-hop has grown from a youth-driven movement into a global culture with artists from multiple generations.
Many veteran rappers continue to tour, release music and headline major events. At the same time, younger artists dominate streaming charts and much of the current cultural conversation.
That creates an ongoing question about what it means for an older rapper to remain relevant.
For Ross, the answer appears to come down to connection with the audience rather than age.
