A Montana shooting at a home in Billings left multiple people dead, including children, after the residence was set on fire Sunday evening.

Authorities said the suspected shooter also died after suffering what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.

Montana Shooting Leaves Multiple People Dead

Billings police received a 911 call around 6 p.m. Mountain Time Sunday reporting a shooting at a home.

Officers responding to the scene reportedly heard gunfire during the emergency call. The first officer arrived at about 6:12 p.m., when police said someone fired shots from the back of the house.

Just three minutes later, authorities reported seeing smoke coming from the residence. The house was eventually engulfed in flames.

Police have not released the exact number of victims who died. As of Tuesday morning, officials said only that multiple people were killed, including children.

Suspected Shooter Dies After Gunshot Wound

According to KULR, police found the suspected shooter outside the home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Medics transported the suspect to a hospital, where he later died.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victims or the suspected shooter as the investigation continues.

Officials are also working to determine exactly how the fire began.

Investigation Continues in Billings

Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell described the investigation as complex.

Multiple law enforcement, fire and medical agencies responded to the scene. O’Donnell also said he had met with family members connected to those involved.

Investigators expect the case to continue for several days as authorities work to establish what happened inside the home and determine how the shooting and fire unfolded.

Despite the deadly incident, authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Officials Respond to Deadly Shooting

Montana Rep. Troy Downing offered condolences to those affected by the shooting and fire.

He also thanked law enforcement officers, firefighters and medical personnel who responded to what he described as a dangerous and fast-moving situation.

Authorities are expected to provide additional information Wednesday, Aug. 26.

For now, officials have not released the total number of victims. The investigation remains active, and the identities of those killed have not been publicly disclosed.
