Netflix is taking viewers behind the iconic mohawk, gold chains and catchphrase that made Mr. T a household name.
The streamer has released the official trailer and key art for Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool, a new documentary about Laurence Tureaud’s extraordinary journey from Chicago’s South Side to international pop culture fame. The documentary premieres on Netflix on Sept. 8.
Untold Mr. T I Pity the Fool Tells His Story
Before becoming Mr. T, Tureaud grew up in Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes as the youngest of 12 children.
The documentary looks at the experiences that shaped the man behind the larger-than-life persona. Tureaud explains how he created the name Mr. T as a way to command respect after witnessing his father and brother experience disrespect.
The film also explores how his determination helped transform him into one of the most recognizable entertainers of the 1980s.
Mr. T Rose to Fame With Rocky III
Tureaud’s major Hollywood breakthrough came when he landed the role of Clubber Lang in Rocky III.
The film introduced audiences to the performer who would soon become synonymous with the phrase “I pity the fool.” His performance opposite Sylvester Stallone helped launch his career as a major pop culture figure.
He later became even more recognizable as B.A. Baracus on The A-Team, which ran from 1983 to 1987.
The Documentary Goes Beyond the Mohawk
Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool aims to show audiences the person behind the famous image.
The documentary features archival footage and interviews that examine Tureaud’s rise, his carefully crafted persona and the experiences that influenced his career.
The project is directed by Scott Weintrob and forms part of Netflix’s Untold documentary franchise. Cultural figures, including Terry Crews, also appear in the film.
