Miss USA 2026 gives the crown a new meaning
Justus Kelley of Virginia won Miss USA 2026 in Miami on Aug. 27. Her victory marks a new chapter for the pageant. At 31, Kelley became the first mother and married woman to win the title. She also became the first woman in her 30s to claim the crown.
The result follows rule changes that Miss USA introduced in 2023. The organization removed its age limit and opened the competition to married women and mothers. Kelley is the first winner to reach the crown under all three changes.
Kelley has built a career that goes beyond pageantry. She founded Foster Footprints, an organization that supports foster youth in the Washington area. She also serves as a global ambassador for St. Jude and has written the children’s book series More Than One Thing.
Her education includes a bachelor’s degree in community health and a master’s degree in public health administration from Indiana University. Her work with young people remains a key part of her public platform.
Miss USA changes what it looks for
This year’s competition also introduced a new commercial appeal category. The category looked at how contestants could attract sponsors and connect with brands.
Contestants submitted portfolios with non-pageant images for this part of the judging. The change gives business appeal a larger place in the competition.
As a result, contestants now bring more than stage presence to the competition. Their careers, public work and personal platforms can also shape their appeal.
Kelley already has experience in those areas. Her nonprofit work gives her a clear cause, while her writing career adds another part to her public profile.
The timing of her victory also stands out. Miss USA has spent the past few years changing its rules and reshaping its approach. This year’s winner fits that new direction in several ways.

A new chapter after a changing year
The competition also went through changes before the final night. The CW stepped away from broadcasting Miss USA and Miss Teen USA shortly before the event because of a contractual issue.
Instead, the competition streamed through Queen Beauty Network. The pageant also entered the year with new leadership after Thom Brodeur became CEO.
Now Kelley moves on to the international stage. She will represent the United States at Miss Universe in Puerto Rico in November.
Her victory gives Miss USA a titleholder who reflects the rules the organization changed three years ago. More importantly, it shows how the competition is making room for women with families, careers and community work.
For Kelley, the next test comes on the Miss Universe stage. For Miss USA, her win may offer an early look at what the crown could represent in the years ahead.
