The Trump administration is bringing a celebrity twist to small-business promotion.
The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that Nicki Minaj will serve as a judge for its upcoming Million Dollar Pitch Competition. The live finale will take place in Washington, D.C., on September 18.
The competition will feature five entrepreneurs competing for a share of a $1 million prize pool.
Former Superman actor Dean Cain will host the event. Entrepreneur Grant Cardone and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia will join Minaj on the judging panel.
The SBA launched the competition as part of its Freedom 250 initiative, which celebrates 250 years of American free enterprise.
Nicki Minaj Will Judge Five Finalists
The SBA selected five small businesses for the live finale after entrepreneurs submitted pitches earlier this year.
The finalists include Compotech Inc. of Maine, Winton Machine of Georgia, Plas-Tech Tooling of Iowa, Red River of Wyoming and VetPowered of California.
The agency evaluated businesses on several factors. Those included economic impact, job creation, competitiveness, business fundamentals and the ability to execute their plans.
Each finalist will receive prize money.
The winner will take home $400,000. Second place receives $250,000, while third place gets $150,000. Fourth place earns $125,000, and fifth place receives $75,000.
Dean Cain Will Host the Million Dollar Pitch
Although the event has drawn comparisons to Shark Tank, Cain will host rather than serve as a judge.
Cain is best known for playing Superman on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. He has also worked as a producer, director and television host.
Minaj, meanwhile, brings experience from the music and business worlds.
The SBA describes her as an entrepreneur who has built ventures across areas including music, fashion, beauty and consumer products.
Cardone brings experience in real estate and private equity, while Gebbia contributes experience from building Airbnb and serving as the Trump administration’s U.S. chief design officer.
Trump Competition Draws Shark Tank Comparisons
The format has naturally attracted comparisons to Shark Tank.
Five entrepreneurs will pitch their companies before a high-profile panel. They will compete for cash awards while presenting their businesses to a live audience.
The concept also recalls Trump’s television career.
Before entering politics, Trump hosted The Apprentice, a reality series that centered on business challenges and contestants competing for professional opportunities.
The SBA event differs from that format because the finalists are established small businesses competing for growth capital rather than a job.
Who Is Funding the $1 Million Prize?
The $1 million prize pool will come from Clover Network Inc., according to the SBA.
The agency says the competition highlights small businesses and their contributions to the U.S. economy. The prize money will go directly to the five finalists based on their final rankings.
The competition will form part of the SBA’s broader Freedom 250 programming.
