Tyler Perry is looking back at his childhood and the journey that shaped him as he celebrates his 57th birthday.
The filmmaker, actor, playwright and producer used his birthday to share an emotional message to his younger self. In the reflection, Perry imagined speaking to the little boy he once was while looking at everything his life would eventually become.
His message centered on his mother, Maxine, the difficult moments he survived and the joy he discovered on the other side of his pain.
Tyler Perry remembers the beginning
Perry began his reflection by taking himself back to September 1969, when he was born.
According to his post, there was even some uncertainty surrounding his birth date. He recalled that the doctor believed he was born on September 13, while his mother believed it was September 14.
In a playful reflection, Perry said that he would eventually celebrate both days. However, he added that his personality made it clear that his mother had been right all along.
More importantly, Perry remembered the woman who welcomed him into the world.
His mother, Maxine, was thrilled to have her first son. Perry described the love he received from her as something that would remain with him for decades.
That love, he explained, would become especially important during some of the darkest periods of his life.
His mother’s love became his first strength
One of the most emotional parts of Perry’s message was his description of holding his mother’s hand.
He described it as the first weapon he would ever hold. The image captured how much strength and protection he associated with his mother during his childhood.
Perry also spoke directly to his younger self, describing the child as beautiful and pure.

According to Perry, pain does not have to be the final chapter.
