Rap-A-Lot Records is marking its 40th anniversary by bringing several important Southern hip-hop albums back to physical formats. The Houston label’s anniversary campaign includes new editions tied to Bun B, Pimp C and Do Or Die, giving longtime listeners another chance to revisit records that helped shape regional rap.
Founded by James Prince in Houston in 1986, Rap-A-Lot built a catalog that included the Geto Boys, Scarface, UGK, Devin the Dude, Z-Ro and Do Or Die. The label’s history became closely connected to the rise of Southern hip-hop and Houston’s distinctive sound.
Rap-A-Lot brings Trill back to vinyl
Bun B’s Trill is one of the central releases in the anniversary campaign. Originally released in 2005, the album returns to vinyl on Oct. 30, marking its first vinyl appearance since 2014. The new edition also gives the album its first gatefold vinyl pressing.
The album features collaborations with Jay-Z, Pimp C, Young Jeezy, Z-Ro, Lil’ Keke, Scarface and others. Its return puts one of Bun B’s defining solo projects back into a physical format that fits naturally with the label’s archival approach.
Collectors will also find several editions, including a limited colored pressing and cassette version. The Get On Down edition is limited to 500 copies and comes with a hand-numbered OBI.
Pimp C gets a first vinyl release
Pimp C’s Pimpalation takes the anniversary further. Originally released in 2006, the album is receiving its first vinyl pressing on Nov. 20. CD and cassette editions are also scheduled for the same date.
The album includes collaborations with Bun B, Mike Jones, Scarface, Lil’ Keke, Slim Thug, 8Ball & MJG, Z-Ro and others. A limited Get On Down edition features a numbered OBI and a bonus screwed version of Pourin’ Up.
For fans of Houston rap, the release adds another important piece to the anniversary campaign. It also gives Pimpalation a physical presentation that was unavailable during its original run.
Do Or Die connects Houston and Chicago
The anniversary extends beyond Houston with Do Or Die’s Picture This. The Chicago group’s 1996 debut returns as an expanded 2xLP edition on Oct. 9, marking its 30th anniversary while becoming part of Rap-A-Lot’s 40th anniversary campaign.
The album includes Po Pimp and other tracks from the original project, with the expanded edition restoring Search Warrant. The release reinforces the wider reach of Rap-A-Lot’s catalog and its role in connecting different regional sounds within hip-hop.
Rap-A-Lot’s anniversary campaign therefore reaches beyond a single city or generation. By returning these albums to vinyl, CD and cassette, the label is giving established listeners new physical editions while introducing younger audiences to a catalog that helped push Southern and Midwest hip-hop into a wider national conversation.
