The story of Mount Everest climber Tenzing Norgay is coming to the big screen. Tenzing, a new film based on true events, will premiere in select theaters on Oct. 9, 2026, before arriving globally on Apple TV on Oct. 16.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, the film explores Norgay’s historic journey alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary. Together, they became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Tenzing Follows a Historic Everest Journey
Genden Phuntsok stars as Tenzing Norgay, a gifted Himalayan climber whose skills place him at the center of a major British expedition.
The film follows Tenzing as he fights for a place on the British climbing team. Rather than serving only as a guide or porter, he wants to be recognized as a climber capable of reaching the summit.
His wife, Dawa, played by Thinley Lhamo, encourages him to pursue his dream. Tenzing also finds an important ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson, portrayed by Caitríona Balfe.
Together, they work to convince Colonel John Hunt, played by Willem Dafoe, that Tenzing deserves a place among the expedition’s climbers.
The story also explores the different ways Tenzing and Western climbers view Mount Everest. While some see the mountain as a challenge to conquer, Tenzing reveres Chomolungma as a sacred mother goddess.
Tenzing and Edmund Hillary Form a Powerful Partnership
As the expedition moves higher into the Himalayas, the film examines the tension created by differences in background, class and ambition.
Tenzing and Edmund Hillary, played by Tom Hiddleston, come from very different worlds. Yet the dangerous climb gradually brings the two men together.
Far above the world below, social status and imperial divisions begin to matter less. What remains is the trust and respect developed between two outsiders pursuing an extraordinary goal.

Jennifer Peedom Directs Tenzing
Jennifer Peedom directs Tenzing from a screenplay by Luke Davies. Peedom and Davies also developed the story together.
The film features an international cast led by Genden Phuntsok, Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe, Caitríona Balfe, Thinley Lhamo and Tenzin Dalha.
Peedom, Davies, Liz Watts, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Desray Armstrong serve as producers. Norbu Tenzing, Simon Gillis and David Michôd are executive producers.
The project aims to bring greater attention to Tenzing Norgay’s role in one of mountaineering’s most famous achievements.
When to Watch Tenzing
Tenzing will premiere in select theaters on Oct. 9, 2026. The film will then be available globally on Apple TV on Oct. 16, 2026.
