Iyanla Vanzant is bringing her signature truth-telling back to a live audience with two new OWN spotlight specials this October.
The celebrated life coach and relationship expert will tackle complicated family dynamics and communication between Black men and Black women in the two-part special event.
OWN will premiere “Mothers & Daughters: Torn Apart” on Oct. 9. One week later, “What Black Men Say vs. What Black Women Hear” will premiere on Oct. 16.
Iyanla Vanzant confronts family wounds
“Mothers & Daughters: Torn Apart” will bring three generations of mothers and daughters together.
The special will explore painful truths and difficult family relationships. It will also focus on breaking destructive cycles that can continue across generations.
Vanzant has built her career around helping people confront emotional challenges. This new special puts that approach in front of a live audience as families face issues that can remain unresolved for years.
The generational focus also gives the special a chance to explore how family patterns can affect relationships across multiple generations.
Black men and women tackle communication
The second special takes on another complicated subject.
“What Black Men Say vs. What Black Women Hear” will premiere Oct. 16. The special will examine the communication gap between Black men and Black women.
Rather than focusing on one relationship, the conversation will explore how people can interpret the same words differently.
That approach gives Vanzant another opportunity to push participants toward honest conversations about relationships, expectations and understanding.
Vanzant brings truth-telling back
The two specials mark Vanzant’s return to a live audience after years away from that format.
Her approach centers on difficult conversations and personal reflection. As a result, both specials promise to put emotional honesty at the center of the conversation.
Vanzant also shared a message about the importance of healing.
“When we do the sacred work of mending what has been broken, we don’t just transform our relationships; we transform ourselves,” she said.
Her words capture the central theme connecting both specials: meaningful change can begin when people are willing to confront what has been broken.
