A three set win over Camila Osorio keeps Gauff moving in Beijing.
Coco Gauff returned to competition with a demanding three set win over Camila Osorio at the China Open in Beijing on Saturday.
The American won 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2 to reach the third round. It was her first match since the U.S. Open semifinals, where she lost to Elena Rybakina on Sept. 11. The three week break showed at times, especially on serve.
Still, Gauff found enough control when the match tightened. She closed out the first set in a tiebreak, then pulled away in the final set to move on.
Gauff survives a difficult serving day
Osorio made Gauff work for nearly every step forward. The Colombian repeatedly pressured the American’s serve and kept the match close through the first two sets.
Gauff did not have her cleanest serving performance. However, she stayed composed when Osorio pushed her into long rallies. The American also found ways to change the pace and protect her chances in the deciding set.
The match lasted about two hours and 18 minutes. Gauff won the opening tiebreak 7-4 before Osorio answered with a 6-4 second set. Gauff then took control of the third set and finished 6-2.

Beijing still holds a special place for Gauff
The win also kept an important Beijing streak alive.
Gauff reached the semifinals at the China Open in 2023. She then won the tournament in 2024 before returning to the semifinals in 2025. The WTA’s official record confirms those three straight semifinal appearances.
Her 2024 title remains one of the biggest moments of her Beijing career. Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 in that final to claim her second WTA 1000 title.
Now, she has another chance to extend that run.
Gauff looks ahead to the third round
Gauff will next face the winner of Cristina Bucsa and Chinese teenager Sun Xinran. Sun entered the match as the world No. 582, according to AFP.
The China Open is a WTA 1000 event played on outdoor hard courts. The 2026 tournament runs through Oct. 11 in Beijing and features a 96 player singles draw.
For Gauff, the next round offers another chance to sharpen her game after the long break. Her first match back was far from routine, but she got through it. Beijing has given her another opportunity to build from there.
