Aminata Seck is out of ICE custody after spending two months in detention.
The 26-year-old Kentucky State University basketball player was released Wednesday, October 7, after posting a $2,500 bond.
ICE detained Seck at Louisville’s airport on August 7. At the time, she was traveling with her teammates to New York.
Her release comes after an immigration judge reopened her case last week. The judge also rescinded a deportation order after finding that Seck had not received notice of a hearing.
Aminata Seck spent two months in detention
Seck, who is from Senegal, remained in ICE custody for about two months.
During her detention, she also faced concerns involving her health and mobility. Seck said she spent about a week in isolation after refusing to remove a knee brace.
According to her attorneys, she was also unable to receive needed knee surgery while detained.
Her experience became part of the legal proceedings surrounding her immigration case.
Following the judge’s decision, Seck was able to leave detention after posting bond.
Seck wants to return to school
After her release, Seck said she is ready to return to school.
“I’m ready to go back to school, get my master’s, and get this surgery done,” she said.
Her comments highlight her focus on education and recovery following her time in detention.
Seck is a basketball player at Kentucky State University. She has also been working through her immigration case while pursuing her education.
Now that she is out of custody, she can continue those proceedings outside detention.
Her immigration case remains ongoing
Seck’s release does not end her immigration case.
Her attorneys will continue working on the case as she remains outside ICE custody. The judge’s decision to reopen the case also gives her an opportunity to continue the legal process.
For now, Seck is focused on returning to school and addressing her knee injury.
Her release also marks the end of a two-month period in ICE detention.
The Kentucky State basketball player can now focus on her education, recovery and next steps while her immigration proceedings continue.
