Ashley Allison Discusses Midterm Turnout and The Root 100

Ashley Allison appeared on The Breakfast Club to discuss Election Day, voter participation, Black political engagement and the future of The Root. The media owner and political commentator also shared her thoughts on affordability, public trust and the importance of staying connected with elected officials beyond Election Day.

During the November 3 interview, Allison spoke with DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Jess Hilarious about the issues shaping the 2026 midterm elections. She said she was encouraged by the number of people participating in the voting process.

She described the turnout figures as record-breaking and said they reflected people’s belief in democracy and their desire to influence what happens in the country.

Although she acknowledged that many Americans were exhausted by politics, Allison said voting remained an important way for people to exercise their influence.

Ashley Allison discusses a new generation of Democratic candidates

The conversation also examined the candidates seeking to reshape the Democratic Party. Allison pointed to several political figures she believes represent a different generation of leadership.

She mentioned Scott Colom in Mississippi, Angie Nixon in Florida, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and James Talarico in Texas. She described them as examples of emerging political talent outside the traditional Democratic establishment.

Allison said these candidates could help introduce a new agenda and change how voters perceive the party.

She also argued that political candidates should remain authentic rather than changing their personalities to appeal to voters. However, she acknowledged that governing brings challenges that candidates must navigate after winning elections.

Affordability and public trust remain major concerns

When asked how Democrats could rebuild public trust, Allison said the party needed a clear agenda focused on everyday financial pressures.

She highlighted affordable housing, grocery costs and tax relief as areas requiring attention. She also discussed support for struggling farmers and the economic challenges facing rural communities.

Allison noted that even if Democrats gained control of Congress, President Donald Trump would remain in office and retain veto power. She argued that lawmakers should still introduce legislation addressing these concerns.

She added that voters should be able to see which proposals lawmakers support and where disagreements occur.

Allison urges Black voters to demand accountability

Allison also discussed the relationship between political candidates and Black communities. She said candidates should explain what they intend to do for Black voters before asking for their support.

She emphasized that political engagement should continue after elections. According to Allison, voters should maintain conversations with elected officials and hold them accountable for campaign promises.

She compared the relationship between politicians and voters to a long-term relationship that requires communication and continued attention.

Allison also said Democrats should invest more in Black and Latino communities, as well as young voters, instead of concentrating too heavily on winning over people who have repeatedly rejected the party.

The Root 100 announcement is coming November 12

Beyond politics, Allison discussed her work as the owner of The Root. She said the publication’s audience numbers were growing across its social media platforms, YouTube channel and website.

She attributed that growth partly to audiences seeking reliable sources of information and journalism they can trust.

Allison explained that running the publication requires significant work and has influenced how she balances her other professional commitments.

She also confirmed that The Root 100 list would be announced on November 12. The publication plans to celebrate the honorees in December.

Ashley Allison reflects on family, travel and personal well-being

The interview also touched on Allison’s decision to make more room for family and personal time.

She revealed that she traveled to Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zanzibar with her mother. The trip included a family wedding in Rwanda.

Allison explained that her mother’s quadruple bypass surgery came shortly after she learned she would have the opportunity to acquire The Root. She said the experience influenced how she thinks about family, time and priorities.

She also discussed making her health a greater priority after describing how hard she had worked the previous year. She said she wanted to protect her well-being and build a healthier balance between work and personal life.

As the interview ended, Allison declined to predict the outcome of the midterm elections. Instead, she expressed hope that voters would participate, that election results would be accepted and that the country would experience peace.

Her appearance offered a wide-ranging discussion about political participation, Black representation, media ownership and the responsibilities that continue long after Election Day.
