A fan-made PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI could cost tens of thousands of dollars in artificial intelligence processing fees. However, former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij believes someone may still be willing to pay that price.
His prediction raises a new question about the relationship between artificial intelligence and major video game releases. Could unofficial AI-assisted ports push Rockstar Games to bring its official PC version to players sooner?
Vermeij discussed the possibility in a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun. He believes modern AI tools could make it easier to adapt console games for computers, although the process would remain expensive and time-consuming.
Why AI could change Rockstar’s release strategy
Rockstar has a history of releasing major games on consoles before bringing them to PC. Grand Theft Auto V, for example, arrived on consoles in September 2013. Its PC version followed in April 2015.
However, Vermeij believes AI could change the financial calculation behind that strategy.
He suggested that someone could take the PlayStation 5 version of GTA 6 and use AI tools to adapt it for PC. Such a project would probably fall short of Rockstar’s official version. Even so, it could attract players who do not want to wait.
Vermeij also made an important distinction. He no longer works at Rockstar and does not know what the company currently plans. His comments reflect his industry experience, not an announcement from the studio.
The price of an unofficial GTA 6 port
Creating an unofficial version would require significant computing resources. Vermeij expects the work to consume thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars in AI tokens.
Those tokens represent the processing capacity developers purchase when they use certain AI services. Therefore, a project of this scale could become expensive before anyone produces a playable result.
Still, the popularity of GTA 6 could motivate independent developers to attempt it. The game’s enormous audience creates a financial and cultural incentive that smaller titles may not offer.
When will GTA 6 arrive on PC?
Rockstar has officially scheduled GTA 6 for Nov. 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, its official platform information does not currently list a PC release date.
There have been reports suggesting a possible first-quarter 2027 PC release. However, Rockstar has not confirmed that timeline.
For now, PC players should rely on announcements from Rockstar rather than unofficial release estimates. They should also be cautious about downloading supposed early PC versions from unfamiliar websites.
What this means for PC gamers
Vermeij’s prediction highlights a growing challenge for major game publishers. AI could lower some barriers to adapting existing software, but that does not guarantee a complete, stable or legitimate game port.
An unofficial version could also create problems involving security, performance and intellectual property.
For Rockstar, the possibility presents another reason to consider the timing of its PC release. Nevertheless, there is no evidence that the company has changed its schedule because of AI.
For now, the official console launch remains Nov. 19. Whether someone will spend five figures attempting an unofficial PC version is another question entirely.
