Las Vegas Aces star Chelsea Gray revealed a racist direct message she received after the team’s loss to the Indiana Fever, prompting Hilton Grand Vacations to terminate the employee responsible.
Gray shared a screenshot of the Instagram message on Monday, July 14, writing, “People act like we make this s— up.” She also criticized the ongoing abuse many WNBA players face online.
“And the audacity to tell us as athletes to ‘shut up and dribble,'” Gray added in her Instagram Story.
The post quickly spread across social media, where users identified the sender as an employee of Hilton Grand Vacations.
Hilton confirms employee’s termination
By Tuesday, Hilton Grand Vacations confirmed it had fired the employee.
In a statement, the company said the individual’s conduct violated several company policies.
“His behavior was in violation of multiple company policies and does not reflect our company’s values in any way,” the company said.
The company did not release additional details about the former employee or indicate whether any further disciplinary action would follow.
Chelsea Gray highlights ongoing WNBA abuse
Gray’s post renewed conversations about the growing level of online harassment directed at WNBA players.
The veteran guard has become the latest player to publicly expose racist abuse after a high-profile game.
Her decision to post the message also underscored a concern repeatedly raised by players across the league. Many have argued that racist comments and personal attacks continue long after games end.
As a result, fans and fellow athletes rallied behind Gray on social media, condemning the message and praising her for speaking out.
Recent incidents raise player safety concerns
The incident comes only weeks after Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas revealed she received racist messages and death threats following a game against the Indiana Fever.
Thomas said the abuse intensified after she committed a foul against Fever star Caitlin Clark.
Following those incidents, Thomas urged the WNBA to take stronger action against online harassment instead of relying only on public statements.
Several players have echoed those concerns throughout the season. They have called for improved security measures, stronger partnerships with social media platforms, and harsher consequences for abusive fans.
WNBA continues to confront online harassment
The league has repeatedly condemned racist behavior directed at its athletes.
However, many players believe more action is necessary as online abuse continues to increase.
Gray’s experience adds to a growing list of incidents that have sparked discussions about racism, player safety, and accountability in professional sports.
For now, Hilton Grand Vacations has acted by dismissing the employee involved, while conversations about protecting WNBA players both online and in person continue across the league.
