Folarin Balogun says the controversy surrounding his overturned red card suspension created unexpected distractions inside the United States men’s national team camp before its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 loss to Belgium.
The USMNT striker admitted the last-minute decision drew significant attention. However, he insisted the team remained focused despite the unusual circumstances.
Folarin Balogun reflects on FIFA’s late decision
Balogun initially received a red card during the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a result, he faced suspension for the next match.
However, FIFA overturned the decision one day before the Americans faced Belgium. The ruling restored Balogun’s eligibility and immediately sparked debate among fans, media, and Belgian supporters.
The reversal also became a political talking point after President Donald Trump said he contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review. Trump later said he believed the original challenge did not deserve a red card.
Balogun says teammates felt the pressure
Speaking after the tournament, Balogun admitted the news created uncertainty within the squad.
“I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy,” he said.
He explained that teammates had already prepared for Belgium without him. Then, while traveling to a training session, they learned FIFA had reversed the suspension.
According to Balogun, the sudden change naturally created nerves because situations like that rarely happen during a World Cup.
Even so, he emphasized that the team quickly shifted its focus back to football.
USMNT remained focused despite distractions
Balogun believes the players handled the situation professionally.
“It’s more about separating the emotion from the job at hand,” he said.
He added that everyone inside the camp remained fully committed to preparing for Belgium despite the attention surrounding the ruling.
Ultimately, the United States suffered a 4-1 defeat, ending its World Cup
Balogun acknowledged that the disappointing result overshadowed any discussion about whether the controversy affected the team’s performance.
Donald Trump explains his involvement
Trump later defended his decision to contact FIFA officials.
He said he only requested a review of the incident and did not attempt to influence the governing body’s final decision.
“I asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul,” Trump said. “You want to see a game with your best players.”
His comments added another layer to an already controversial decision that attracted worldwide attention before kickoff.
Belgium’s tournament also ends
Belgium advanced past the United States but could not continue its World Cup run.
Spain eliminated Belgium in the quarterfinals, ending its hopes of lifting the trophy.
Meanwhile, Balogun and the USMNT will now turn their attention toward future international competitions as they reflect on a World Cup campaign that ended earlier than expected.
