The Jared Verse Browns trade surprised the young defensive star, who admitted the move initially hurt. After building relationships and routines with the Los Angeles Rams, he suddenly found himself beginning a new chapter with the Cleveland Browns.
Cleveland acquired Verse and several draft picks in exchange for star pass rusher Myles Garrett. Although the deal caught him off guard, his outlook changed after meeting the Browns coaching staff and learning about the organization’s long-term vision.
“I’d be lying to y’all if I say it didn’t hurt, if it didn’t bother me,” Verse said during an appearance on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football. “You build relationships with people, you build a routine, then you start getting close, you start imagining your whole career in one place.”
However, the disappointment quickly turned into motivation.
After arriving in Cleveland, Verse embraced the team’s direction. Conversations with coaches, teammates, and staff convinced him he could play a major role in the franchise’s future.
“I started getting excited, I started getting hyped up,” Verse said. “I was like, man, forget this offseason, this little camp, preseason. Let’s get right to the season.”
Jared Verse wants to establish his own defensive identity
Verse enters Cleveland after a strong second NFL season with the Rams. The former first-round pick recorded 7.5 sacks and earned a reputation as one of the league’s most promising young pass rushers.
His time in Los Angeles exposed him to an established defensive culture. Even so, the move to Cleveland gives him the opportunity to build a legacy of his own.
For years, the Browns have built their identity around an aggressive and physical defense. Verse wants to add his own intensity while helping the unit maintain that reputation.
“The Cleveland Browns defense has always been known as aggressive, attacking, really getting after you, really getting in your face,” Verse said.
He also praised teammates Alex Wright, Mike Hall, Carson Schwesinger, and Quincy Williams as examples of the talent already on the roster.
According to Verse, the group already has the pieces needed to become one of the NFL’s top defenses.
“I’m here just to add my own little flavor,” he said. “I’m here to get in your face. I’m here to be a little bit more aggressive.”
Browns defense enters a new era
Replacing Myles Garrett’s production will rank among Cleveland’s toughest challenges this season. During his time with the Browns, Garrett developed into one of the NFL’s elite pass rushers.
Verse understands he cannot replace Garrett’s legacy by himself. Instead, he hopes to help establish a new defensive standard.
He has fully embraced the opportunity to become one of the leaders of Cleveland’s next defensive chapter.
“I want that to be the standard of defense across the nation,” Verse said. “That’s Jared Verse defense.”
His vision centers on old-school football, where offenses must fight for every yard.
“That old-school defense where you got to get nitty-gritty and you’re gonna really have to earn every yard,” he said.
Cleveland expects Verse to continue developing
Cleveland expects Verse to continue developing as the team reshapes its defense. His speed, strength, and pass-rushing ability give the Browns another disruptive presence along the defensive front.
If he continues progressing, Verse could become one of the NFL’s most impactful young defenders. His arrival also gives Cleveland a cornerstone for the future.
One major question still surrounds the Browns. Can the offense match the defense’s potential? A stronger offensive performance would make the team far more competitive.
For now, Verse remains focused on proving himself in Cleveland while building a defensive identity that reflects his own style.
Although the Jared Verse Browns trade began with disappointment, he now views it as an opportunity to create something lasting.
