Thousands of ChatGPT users ran into problems on July 25 after a widespread outage blocked access to saved conversations and disrupted logins across several OpenAI services. Many users saw the message Unable to Load Conversation, raising concerns that chat histories had disappeared or accounts had been affected.
The issue appeared across both web and mobile platforms, although the experience varied from one user to another. While some people could still start new chats, others could not access previous conversations or sign in at all.
ChatGPT outage spreads across multiple services
Reports of the disruption climbed rapidly on Downdetector, where user complaints surged well above normal levels. The spike pointed to a broad service issue instead of isolated account or regional problems.
OpenAI later acknowledged the outage through its official status page. The company said it was investigating problems affecting ChatGPT and related services. It later confirmed that engineers had applied mitigation measures and were monitoring recovery as systems gradually returned to normal.
The disruption also affected other OpenAI products, including DALL·E, Sora, Codex and browser based access for some users.

Why conversations stopped loading
The Unable to Load Conversation error usually appears when ChatGPT cannot retrieve chat history from its servers. During major outages, users may still reach the homepage but fail to open older conversations. Others may experience login failures or slow responses while the platform recovers.
Temporary server issues, heavy traffic and synchronization problems can all interrupt communication between a browser and OpenAI systems. As a result, conversation history may become unavailable even though it has not been deleted.
What users can do
Users experiencing the error can refresh the page, sign out and back in or try another browser. Opening ChatGPT in a private browsing window may also help if cached data or browser extensions are causing conflicts.
Clearing browser cookies and cache can resolve local issues. Likewise, switching from WiFi to mobile data may reveal whether the problem is related to the network connection rather than the service itself.
However, users should avoid deleting conversations or making major account changes while the outage continues. In many cases, saved chats return once the affected systems recover.
Recovery may take time
Service restoration often happens in stages instead of all at once. Some users regain access before others as systems stabilize.
The most reliable way to track progress is through OpenAI’s official status page. Although social media and outage tracking websites can highlight emerging problems, only OpenAI can confirm the cause and recovery status of a service disruption.
For important work, keeping local copies of key conversations remains a sensible precaution during temporary outages.
