Legendary songwriter David Porter looked back on his career at Stax Records, sharing heartfelt memories of the artists who helped shape soul music while praising The Notorious B.I.G. for bringing new life to his work through sampling.
During a recent interview, Porter reflected on his longtime collaborators, his friendship with Isaac Hayes, and the responsibility that comes with influence. He also revealed that he has rejected sample requests when he felt the music did not align with his values.
David Porter honors Stax Records legends
When asked what he would say if he could spend one more day at Stax Records with his late friends and collaborators, Porter offered words of appreciation for the people who helped build the iconic label.
He praised Stax co-founder Jim Stewart for creating opportunities that allowed artists to express themselves freely.
Porter also celebrated Rufus Thomas, saying the singer helped establish Stax Records as a unique force in American music.
He continued by honoring gospel legend Rance Allen, calling him one of the greatest voices of his generation. Porter said Allen’s music reached far beyond church walls and touched people from every walk of life.
Isaac Hayes remained David Porter’s closest creative partner
Porter became emotional while discussing his friendship with Isaac Hayes, describing the late musician as one of the most important people in his life.
The songwriting duo created some of Stax Records’ biggest hits and developed a creative partnership that changed soul music.
Porter praised Hayes for refusing to accept limits placed on his voice or artistry. He said Hayes found innovative ways to reinterpret songs and transform them into unforgettable performances.
Looking back, Porter said he would remind Hayes how much he loved and respected him throughout their years together.
David Porter believes artists should inspire others
Porter also discussed the responsibility that comes with having a public platform.
He admitted feeling disappointed when celebrities choose not to use their influence to encourage positive change.
Now approaching his 85th birthday, Porter said he hopes to motivate younger generations by showing what determination and perseverance can accomplish.
At the same time, he acknowledged that many entertainers do use their platforms to make a difference and praised those who lead by example.
David Porter explains why he rejects some sample requests
Throughout his career, hundreds of artists have sampled Porter’s music.
He revealed that he has declined some requests because he did not believe every project reflected the values he wanted associated with his work.
Although Porter estimated that nearly 600 songs have sampled his catalog, he admitted he has not listened to every recording that uses his music.
Biggie earned David Porter’s admiration
One artist who made a lasting impression on Porter was The Notorious B.I.G.
He said he admired how Biggie transformed classic recordings into powerful new songs while maintaining his own unique voice.
Porter specifically mentioned “Who Shot Ya?”, saying he appreciated how Biggie built on the musical foundation created by earlier artists.
He also noted that “The Masquerade Is Over,” a song featuring his vocals, has been sampled numerous times.
Rather than comparing generations, Porter said he respects artists who make the most of their moment. He believes every generation has its own opportunity to leave a lasting impact through music.
As one of soul music’s most influential songwriters, Porter continues to celebrate creativity while encouraging artists to honor both the past and the future.
