Social Security recipients need to check their monthly budgets carefully, since the payment schedule shifts in August 2026. Those who receive Supplemental Security Income, known as SSI, will not see a separate payment arrive within the month at all.
This shift comes down to a standard Social Security Administration rule. Whenever the first day of a month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSI payments go out on the preceding business day instead. Since August 1 lands on a Saturday this year, the SSI payment for August actually arrived a day early on Friday, July 31. Individuals received $994, while couples received $1,491.
Why the Social Security calendar shift matters for budgeting
For anyone relying on that monthly deposit as their only income, this shift matters significantly. It can be easy to overlook the fact that no separate check will arrive in August, especially for those used to a predictable monthly rhythm. This same calendar rule will affect payments two more times before 2026 ends, so recipients should expect similar adjustments later in the year.
SSI provides financial support to people who are 65 or older, blind, or living with a qualifying disability, provided they also meet strict income and asset requirements. Adults generally must earn less than $2,019 per month in wages to qualify. Many SSI recipients also receive regular Social Security benefits, though the two programs operate under separate funding structures.
When regular Social Security payments arrive in August
Unlike SSI, regular Social Security retirement benefits will follow their standard monthly schedule in August. Payments go out in three separate waves based on birth date, plus one additional date tied to when a recipient first began collecting benefits.
Those who started receiving benefits before May 1997 will see their payment on Monday, August 3. Recipients born between the 1st and 10th of the month will receive their payment on August 12. Those born between the 11th and 20th will see their deposit on August 19. Recipients born between the 21st and 31st will receive their payment on August 26.
What comes next for SSI payment dates
Looking ahead, SSI payment dates for the remainder of 2026 follow a similar weekend-and-holiday adjustment pattern. The September payment arrives Tuesday, September 1. October’s payment lands Thursday, October 1, followed by the November payment on Friday, October 30. December’s payment arrives Tuesday, December 1, and the January 2027 payment lands early once again on Thursday, December 31.
Recipients relying on SSI should mark these dates now, since each one shifts slightly earlier whenever the standard first-of-the-month date falls on a weekend or holiday.
