Rogue Pictures and Inaugural Entertainment present The Dutchman, a Cinemation Studios production that reimagines one of the most provocative works in American theater for a modern audience. Officially selected for South by Southwest (SXSW) 2026 , the film is a psychological thriller rooted in legacy, tension, and truth, drawing directly from Dutchman, the Obie Award-winning play by Amiri Baraka.

At the center of the story is Clay (André Holland), a successful yet emotionally fractured Black businessman struggling to save his marriage. Alongside his wife Kaya (Zazie Beetz), Clay attends therapy sessions in hopes of healing old wounds. But their therapist, played with unnerving restraint by Stephen McKinley Henderson, is not what he seems. As the lines between therapy and reality begin to blur, the therapist starts appearing in Clay’s life outside the office, signaling that something far more sinister is unfolding.

The tension escalates on a New York City subway train, where Clay encounters Lula, portrayed by Kate Mara. Seductive, unsettling, and unpredictable, Lula slowly begins to dismantle Clay’s sense of self. What begins as a chance meeting turns into a psychological reckoning, forcing Clay to confront buried trauma, racialized power dynamics, and the cost of survival in America.

Anchoring the ensemble cast is Aldis Hodge, whose performance adds emotional depth and gravity to a story that refuses easy answers. The screenplay, written by Qasim Basir and Andre Gaines, honors Baraka’s original vision while pushing it firmly into the present day.

Directed by Gaines and produced by Jonathan T. Baker and Gaines, The Dutchman is not a simple adaptation, it’s a confrontation. A meditation on race, identity, and psychological warfare, the film challenges viewers to sit with discomfort, question appearances, and reckon with the truths we inherit and the ones we refuse to face.

The film opens Friday, January 2, 2026 nationwide in theaters only. Follow the film on Instagram and Facebook at @thedutchmanmovie.
